Never Sure Amid Occupation War Echoes in Austria
A 34 year old refugee worker writes from an Austrian rehabilitation center about life under opposite occupiers. She fled Upper Austria in 1944 fearing Russians then in control there while her parents remained in Lower Austria. Her husband was killed on a Russian battlefield four months after their marriage. Her income from the center only covers food and lodging, and clothing remains a scarce item. The letter thanks Mrs Ridgely for a dress received, noting the hardship faced by refugees and the uncertain conditions of postwar life.
