Frederick residents faced an unexpected April storm as snow, sleet, and rain hit by noon, with four to six inches blanketing streets. Officials noted this could surpass recent seasonal records, recalling April snows in 1917 and forecasts from the Baltimore weather bureau.
Four and a half inches of snow had fallen by noon as a late night storm pressed on. The Weather Bureau said the capital city’s heaviest snow of the season since 1871 was forecast. Streetcars were delayed and trains arriving late, but no troop movements were reported by the railroads.
New York reports an improved legislative outlook in Washington boosting early stock market gains with broader demand for specialty shares. Call money opened at 5 percent as profit taking appeared in spots. A Turkish Women's Party convention in Constantinople drew several hundred representative women of the nation.
At a Frederick meeting of the executive committee several contracts were assigned for the contemplated improvements. Lloyd C. Culler will supervise painting plastering and carpentry. The Associated Press reports a bill in the House proposing 66,849,160 in appropriations for State Justice Commerce and Labor. State 14,958,646 Justice 21,364,898 Commerce 23,769,105 Labor 6,756,516. Prohibition prosecutions 1920 23 show 120,410 started with 79,093 convictions and 13,839,560 in fines. Civil judgments add 336,015. Federal prisons rose to 5,558 inmates January 8, 623 over capacity.
Richmond Va April 1 Dr. Asa W. Chamberlain a 69 year old surgeon sentenced to life for murdering his brother Judge Albert B. Chamberlain planned to escape from the Virginia State penitentiary last week. Authorities learned of the plot in time to prevent him from beginning the plan.
Washington reports examine the political activities of the late Jake Hlamon, Oklahoma Republican national committeeman, with Senator Walsh seeking to prove a 1920s conspiracy to secure a Cabinet post. J. E. Dyche testified about Hamon's campaign costs while R. H. Wilson recalled Hamon boasting of backing Harding nomination and contributions to Daugherty.
John Warfield died Monday night at his Cherry Grove home in Howard County from a complication of diseases after a year of illness. He was born 73 years ago in the same house where he passed away and long led the Daily Recount Company as president before becoming chairman of its board. A Baltimore bar association member and University Club member, he is survived by sister Mrs M Gillette Gill and brother Marshall Warfield. Funeral at his home at 2 p.m. Wednesday with burial in the Warfield family cemetery nearby.

Habeas corpus proceedings for Dorsey Makel, confined in jail after the Bartonsville dance shooting, were filed this morning by attorneys H. Dorsey Etchison and Francis H. Urner. McIntyre died from internal hemorrhages after the gunshot wound to his right lung. hearing set for Saturday at 10.00 before Chief Judge Hammond Urner and Associate Judge Glenn Worthington.
Miss Alice C. Zimmerman, 62, died suddenly at 6 40 am at the Meuse Tailoring Company's plant on South Market Street where she worked. Doctor B O Thomas attributed the death to natural causes. She lived at 148 West Patrick Street with sister Mrs Wm Whert and funeral arrangements were to be announced.
In a Senate investigation, H M Peck testified that Harry M Daugherty helped delay prosecution of the Miller Brothers land case in Oklahoma. The Miller group gained land valued above a quarter of a million dollars and paid a fine of 10900.
Edward R. Pyles of Bethesda was found guilty by a Rockville jury of assaulting William Wilder of Chevy Chase after Wilder’s car stalled near Pyles’ home. Wilder could not pay for towing and the assault, deemed technical, followed. Pyles received a 12 month House of Correction sentence in the police court, with trial on appeal to the Circuit Court.
Clauda Countee, colored, arrested in Washington last week in connection with the Young Men's Shop robbery on March 23, will have a preliminary hearing Friday afternoon before Justice J. Grahame Jolnson. He was brought to Frederick Thursday and jailed. This is the first arrest from the investigation into the local clothing store robbery. Further results have not been released, but Countee is believed to illuminate the case.
A bill to authorize the state to buy about 1000 acres near Catoctin for a state forest reserve cleared the Senate after debate. It would authorize a $32,000 loan to acquire the land, with purchase decisions guided by the Board of Forestry. Opponents warned of a tax rise while supporters argued long term state benefit.

Bow ie Md April 1 todays opening day race card at Bowie track was called off at noon because of a heavy snowstorm. The card will go over until tomorrow as General Manager OHara inspected the track and found it impossible to inaugurate the spring racing season today.
Police released three men after arrest for selling fur coats from a parked machine on Patrick Street. New details show their license was not valid and the permit was revoked. Officers had questioned police handling amid criticism. The men were ordered to stop selling and left Frederick for Hagera town.
John Franklin Thompson, a 12 year old boy, suffered severe injuries to his left leg when an automobile struck him while he rode home from Frederick High School. The crash occurred around noon as he was traveling along West Fifth Street. He was attended by medical staff and later returned home.
Federal Judge vacated the bench warrant for Gaston B. Means and secretary Elmer W. Jarnecke after they failed to appear for trial on conspiracy to violate the Volstead act. Bail of 15000 each was ordered forfeited. breaking ground for Gospel Union Chapel postponed to Sunday April 6 at 3.20 PM on De Grange Street.
In Baltimore a federal jury convicted Harry A. Grove of Frederick of conspiring to illegally withdraw 1000 cases of whiskey from Outerbridge Hereoy Company Burkittsville with sentence postponed. Wilbur Routzahn John Routzahn and Albert White of Frederick were acquitted after a lengthy trial and the jury urged mercy for Grove.
Balky on April 1 in Scranton Pennsylvania saw five labor walkouts. The largest involved 600 Scranton Railway Company workers quitting after wage and hour demands were rejected. Barbers, butchers, plasterers and bricklayers joined the protests, crippling central city services amid a spring snowstorm.
