Superintendent of the Oregon penitentiary Harry Minto was shot and killed near Albany by escaped convict Otto Hooker after Hooker had wounded Jefferson city marshal J. J. Benson. Hooker was killed by a Portland officer later that night.

Christian Associations held first meetings last Wednesday showing strong student interest. Reorganization steps begun for the Agareton Literary Society. Y M C A and Y W C A held a reception for new students on the 24th. Paul Lewis and Miss Marjorie Gregory led the receiving line in Wood-Mar Hall. Enrollment projections matched last year's total. Oratorical Association held a meeting boosting work for the “Old Line,” the Prohibition, and the Peace with the latter to be staged in Newberg for the first time.

State Convention to Host Noon Lectures and Evening Rally
The second annual state convention opens with noon lectures by prominent workers and a keynote address by the president on Tuesday morning. The day ends with a "We Come Night" gathering as local clubs join the W C T U to greet visiting delegates. A chicken pie dinner is served at noon near the convention church and tamales with baked beans in the evening, meals priced at 25 cents, inviting public attendance.

Revenue Stamp Note on Railroad Deed Transfer
The Southern Pacific railway company records in county deed records an instrument transferring property formerly held by the Portland Eugene and Eastern railroad to the Southern Pacific for 115 506 43. The deed shows a single revenue stamp of 100 dollars, the rate one dollar per thousand, unusual in amount and color, with George Washington’s likeness as described by the Telephone Register.
