The September term grand jury convened on Tuesday under Judge Kelly to limit witness expenses for regular trials. Several local option law violations in Carlton and Yamhill districts are being reviewed, with Newberg cases also under inquiry. Over fifty witnesses were subpoenaed, about half of March figures. Judge Kelley disposed of nonjury matters, leaving jury work for the week starting September 23. The Graphic will publish the resulting decisions.
I B Sneed of Texas shot Captain Boyce after a family elopement between Boyce’s son and Mrs Sneed. A Texas jury refused to convict, and Sneed later shot the son. The piece argues low conviction rates in the U S compared with Germany and Europe, claiming criminals face 98 percent odds of avoiding conviction.
