Walter C. Woodward's Political Parties in Oregon covers 1843 to 1868 and Lordly praise follows a glowing Oregonian editorial. The essay highlights Asahel Bush founder of the Oregon Statesman, the Oregonian and Argus paper politics, and the fight over slavery shaping territorial party lines.
In a Sept 9 1913 letter Thomas A McBride praises Woodward Political Parties in Oregon as accurate and valuable. He recalls 1860s contests and notes the author’s industry and research. The book costs two dollars and can be bought at Newberg drug stores or the Graphic office, with mailed copies available on receipt of payment.
The Ray and Thompson general merchandise store in St Paul was totally destroyed by fire on Monday night. Loss estimated at 16000 dollars, partly covered by insurance. Fire thought to have started from a defective flue. The firm plans to rebuild.
The Oregon Railroad Commission heard Chehalem Mutual Co. petition to obtain long distance service over Newberg Telephone Co. lines. After two hours of testimony the panel urged both firms to reach a voluntary agreement within 30 days. if unresolved the commission will intervene.
W. E. Purdy has brought the Win ters deed case back to court with a jury trial. He expresses hopeful prospects for a favorable decision and expects the trial to come up at an early day.
Pacific College plans to open the first semester on Monday with the Academy College and School of Music. Enrollment is expected to rise. tuition remains $20 per semester in the Academy and $25 per semester in the College, with discounts for advance payment. Registration starts Monday, classes begin Tuesday, and a formal opening with music and an address by President Pennington occurs Wednesday at 10.00.
The Pacific Mail Steamship Algoa sailed from Portland on September 7 carrying over 6,000,000 feet of lumber. This load exceeds any previous shipment from the Willamette or Columbia rivers or any Pacific Coast port by 1,000,000 feet and is valued around $100,000.
