Middleton Man Killed by Electric Train

A 22 year old Middleton man, John White, was struck and killed by an electric train near Sherwood. Witnesses say he lay on the track in a drunken stupor after leaving a Sherwood saloon with a bottle nearby. The body was taken to Sherwood where the coroner was notified.

Washington August 29 There are 305164 persons in Oregon working for a living and 88114 employed on farms. Farm operators number 38581 with 37292 men and 1289 women. Farm laborers total 27136 with 26269 men and 867 women. Dairy farmers total 1408 employing 589 laborers and eleven foremen. Stock raising provides 2244 so- lated income earners and 3020 cowboys and sheep herders. Nationwide 71580270 over age 10 are gainfully employed 38167336 or 53 percent on farms 2865000 farm operators employ 5975000 laborers.

Robbers abandon Gaston State Bank theft attempt

An attempted bank robbery at the Gaston State Bank failed when robbers were discouraged near the manganese strong box in the safe. The bank, built last year, had its night work halted. President B F Purdy and cashier Graham Stapleton discovered the results when opening. Sheriff Reeves pursues the suspects.

City council awards paving and grading contracts

At a council meeting John Groff won the Fifth street paving contract for 2499.99 while L. G. Newlin secured the East Second street grading at 25 cents per yard. The U S Rubber Co bid 1.10 per foot for 500 feet of Paragon fire hose. A Meridian street improvement petition was presented from Second to Ninth.

Bourne Committee backs space basis for railway mail pay

Washington report says the Bourne Committee recommends replacing weight with car-mile space in railway mail compensation. The plan would pay roads about 3 million dollars annually, roughly five cents per mile.
