The Herald reports arrangements for a $50,000,000 dry goods corporation to control and operate department stores nationwide. The Mercantile Reorganization Company has formed in Trenton New Jersey as a precursor to large mergers. Key figures from the dry goods trade are backing the plan with financiers, aiming to launch in the fall and acquire stores in cities with 20 000 or more population. The plan envisions 600 to 2000 stores under the new company with former proprietors retained as managers and stockholders. It also includes controlling output of certain mills and buying in large quantities.

Washington Aug 24 The treasury department has accepted compromises with banks over unstamped checks and notes. Despite many inadvertent pleas violations remain high and the department will enforce heavier penalties for each violation to curb stamp tax breaches.
Bids opened for the Citizens bank structure at Baker City with contractor Angall submitting the lowest bid of $17,000. Angall will be authorized to perform the work for the project and Frank Geiser is noted as the builder for the Citizens bank building.
Fire at the St. Anne's Sisters of Mercy orphan asylum near Sparkhill Aug 20 engulfed a three story frame building housing about 1000 children. Explosion of a kerosene lamp sparked the blaze, trapping inmates and prompting special trains to the scene as survivors and rescuers suffered severe losses.
Shanghai reports a land ownership dispute near Hankow on the Yangtze where Jardine Matheson & Co. bought property in 1868 but was moved into a new Russia concession. British consul Hurst aids the owners as Russian consulate guards confronts ensue. the Woodlark lands nearby and bluejackets guard the tract. The Bek is dispatched to Hankow as Britain signals determination.
