Kansas negro soldiers will be allowed to vote in the state election. Colonel Tyson with 770 men and 45 officers left Brooklyn for San Juan de Porto Rico. Evacuation plans for Porto Rico and Cuba are reported amid Spanish and U S maneuvers. Updates include Manila reinforcements, naval shifts, and military commissions.
Berlin reports a shift in German attitudes toward United States retention of the Philippine islands. German merchants in the islands advocate annexation, while officials caution against American concession or interference. A German meat export bill, tainted by anti American claims, is tempered but still risks restricting canned meats and sausages.
Jacksonville October 11. General orders direct the Seventh Army Corps to move from Jacksonville to Savannah pending transport from the quartermaster. Regiments listed include Ninth Illinois Second South Carolina Fourth Illinois First Texas Second Louisiana and others with regimental hospitals to be supplied. Sick are left behind. A future order will rebrigade units upon General Lee's return. The Savannah stay is to be brief before sailing to Cuba.
In Pendleton Oregon on a Saturday afternoon a barn fire trapped an 83 year old girl while other children fled. Neighbor Brown rescued her from burning timbers but sustained severe burns. doctors treated her, yet the child died from her injuries.
At 12 50 P M a west bound Washington Columbia River railroad train struck a 2 year old boy near five miles east of the city. The child wandered onto the tracks and was caught in a cattle guard. The engine could not stop in time and the leg was severed. He died fifteen minutes later.
Admiral Miller arrives aboard his flagship the Philadelphia after hoisting the U S flag over Hawaii. He views the situation there as satisfactory to the government and remains reticent on details. A fire was discovered in the Philadelphia bunkers during a trial cruise from Honolulu and extinguished before causing damage.
Washington telegraph orders transfer Seventh United States infantry from Camp Wikoff Monstauk Point to the Lakes department. They will join Fort Wayne and Brady Michigan stations with baggage and transport arranged by the War Department.
In Omaha the Fremont Elkhorn Missouri Valley freight train rear end collided with a passenger train in the yards. Dining car Delmonico split lengthwise. Waiter Harry Jones of Chicago was killed. Conductor Otto Momedale of Boone fatally hurt. Several others injured including freight engineers J Weeterheid A W Brandt Mike Smith and firemen Frank Spock Madden Pullman conductor D F Danver and waiter Otto Parsons. Cause traced to freight engineer Smith failing to stop for the incoming train at 15 mph on a curve.
Berlin October 11 Princess Troubetzkoi held on an extradition order from Italy died by her own hand at the Berlin police station today. The report notes several high rank ladies with the same name including the wife of a Russian grand maternal and the American novelist once Miss Amelio Rives, casting doubt on identifying the prisoner.
Owensboro Kentucky October 11 Howard Clark sought in Louisville for murder and burglary and his companion Hattie Mahoney were killed while resisting arrest on the Indiana side of the river near here today. Clark sought for the murder of Officer Hefferman at Louisville last August and was about to flee in a skiff towing down the Ohio river.
In Green Bay Wisconsin on October 11 three boys named Emie Daniels Frank Daniels and Joe Junkle were burned to death while sleeping in a barn near the city.
Jacksonville Oct 11 Six new yellow fever cases and two deaths were reported in Jackson as the disease spreads across Mississippi. New cases include Harrison nine Fayette two Poplarville two Madison one and Oxford one death. In total seventeen counties and twenty towns now show yellow fever activity.
Reports from Walker Minnesota describe a growing panic as Leech Lake tensions rise with settlers fleeing for safety. Governor Clough plans to deploy National Guard artillery to Cass Lake, while Marshal O Connor coordinates with General Bacon for possible further arrests and a campaign plan unfolds.
General Bacon reports the uprising near Walker and Leech Lake is easing. Troops remain, with 200 men at Harbach and 150 to 200 on the island. Chippewa leaders try to hinder the revolt while officials expect no mass reinforcements.
A dispatch relays that Bacon says the Indians are completely whipped. He claims the trouble was caused by Chief Bog Ab Me Ge Shig, who was killed by the troops.
The Nippon Yusen Kaisha steamer Yamaguchi Maru arrived at Seattle from Yokohama with a record oriental cargo. Honolulu report to the Associated Press notes ex queen Liliuokalani plans to travel to Washington in mid November to seek compensation from Congress for the loss of her throne and crown lands. Cabinet resignations include Henry Laws and Lt O Austin named as auditor general. Company I New York engineers to survey Pearl Harbor for fortifications and improvements. Chinese contract laborers fund attorneys to contest U S contracts laws.
Paris reports sixty thousand workers on strike halting exposition work. Police and troops patrol riot zones after clashes with laborers and blacklegs. More strikers join and leaders are arrested as reinforcements are sent in. Commodore Watson injured in Sacramento train crash. Mrs McKinley’s brother George Saxton shot dead in Canton. suspect Anna George under arrest.
Ismail Bey announces Crete will see withdrawal of Ottoman troops in line with demands from Great Britain Russia France and Italy after a collective note presented to the Porte. In Dallas Oregon GC Kimball’s large fruit dryer burned yesterday afternoon causing about 3500 loss with 1200 insured and affecting local growers.
Manila reports fourteen smallpox cases and six deaths among American troops in two days. Eight typhoid deaths also occurred. The list of the dead includes H. M. Powers Harry Wheeler Harry Culver Joseph Saly George Cootny and Frank Warwick. Artilleryman Reach was killed by a sentry near Tondo Hawaii and Philippines. In Washington Senator Morgan arrived for talks with the president about the Hawaiian commission and future territorial governance of the Philippines.
Major General Merriam issues orders as the Arizona arrives at Honolulu with Brigadier General Charles King to embark for Manila. Hawaii district records transfer to Col. Thomas H. Barber and Manila reporting follows, while the Arizona returns to the Philippines. Also notes port conditions and a Bayamo stabbing amid Porto Rico unrest.
