A drowned woman linked to a life of sin lies by the Astoria shore as a river judge hears a dying appeal from a vagabond lawyer. The man, once wealthy, pleads he is not a thief, but drinks away his fortune, clutching a ring tied to his mother. A bystander later unveils the ring was misidentified, yet the prisoner dies before aid arrives.
A prisoner accused of stealing a diamond ring is described as not a thief and possibly altered by prison life. Officials note his changed appearance from handsome to pallid and consider him an imitation of a gentleman. He faces a one year sentence after six months of sobriety and good conduct.

Speakers from La Grande Oregon and Portland discussed Farmers Union goals and cooperative efforts, ending in an enjoyable day. The next meeting is scheduled for November 23 at Groth’s hall Dundee.

The central switchboard staff left their posts to celebrate Halloween at Mr. and Mrs. Henry Ehret’s east town home. They avoided calls to prove efficiency and enjoyed a gathering with treats prepared by Miss Alma Porkier and fellow operators plus the Ehret sisters.
Nellie May Larkin born March 8 1877 in Blue Earth County Minnesota came to Newberg with her parents in 1888 she married Walter Hugh Nelson July 10 1900 and died November 1 1912 in Newberg aged 35 years 7 months 23 days left a husband two sons a father mother two sisters three brothers and many friends funeral services were held at home by the Baptist pastor and at the grave by Eastern Star on Saturday afternoon
