The Motor Boat Regatta plans for Newberg on Friday and Saturday expect up to 5000 spectators. Added attractions include top U S divers Miss Thelma Payne Miss Georgia Cormorey and the Pembroke sisters. Saturday races start 2 30 PM with ample river viewing. Friday features Bert Miller Boy Scout events and a popular ball game drawing fans.
The Valley Canning Co. invested $10,000 to build a large and well equipped canning plant in the Northwest to process local berries and fruits. President Rupert says they will expand if local patronage supports it, promising to pay average market prices for the produce. See them before you contact.
Herbert L. Owen died after being struck by a log while operating a donkey engine in a logging camp near Newberg Maries County. He was taken to a Portland hospital where he died soon after. He was born June 2, 1871 in Maiden Rock Wisconsin and later lived in Long Prairie Minnesota Lisbon North Dakota and Newberg. He married Minnie Perking in 1898 and left two children Vivian Blythe and Herbert. Surviving relatives include his parents two sisters and several relatives. He belonged to the Masonic lodge Odd Fellows and Modern Woodmen. The funeral included a large service with a Masonic burial rite and prayers by Rev Elston Emmerson.
Adlai S. Livengood, a 77th Division veteran home from France, notes the unit’s record as Washington reports the 77th made the largest advance of American divisions in France. The 77th advanced 71 kilometers, ahead of the Second Division at 60 kilometers and the Forty second at 55. The First Regulars 51, Eighty ninth 48, with the Third Regulars at 41, together pushing the line forward for over five percent of U S total advance.
Hon B F Mulkey will speak at the Presbyterian church Memorial Day service at 2 pm after Senator Huston becomes unavailable due to his son’s condition and hospitalization. Mulkey, described as a good speaker, is expected to attract a solid audience for the event.
