General Greely today outlined the progress of wireless telegraphy under the U S signal corps noting that the system is not likely to supplant ordinary telegraphic methods. Tests show promise but transmissions remain unreliable and weather and urban iron masses hinder experiments. Balloons may be used. field usefulness is acknowledged for lighthouse and naval communications. A second dispatch reports a mail carrier reaching Deese Lake with relief after prospectors on the Ashcroft trail faced starvation.
The bodies of Mr. Henry Tincknall and his wife were found in their Auburn home. The man was dead with no wounds. The woman was unconscious with a severe head injury and brain exposed, rushed to hospital where she cannot live. Police believe the husband killed her with a hammer then killed himself.
A violent double murder spree in Howard City Michigan ends with Harvey killing his wife and two relatives and wounding a baby and his father in law before shooting himself. He is alive and recovering. investigators seek motive amid threats of lynching.
Three men played catole in a freight car early today in Baltimore. Clarence Kepler of Baltimore died in the blaze and William Alders was badly burned. The flames spread to the cotton warehouse of Mount Vernon coal and dock mills causing about $50,000 damage.
A Philadelphia Reading RR rear end crash near Exeter Reading killed many and injured about 18. Express train struck extra as they waited for orders causing cars to telescope and mangling. Named dead include John Leaf Norristown and Colonel George Shaw Norristown with other victims listed.
Washington May 15 The navy department announces the Olympia will sail home immediately. Secretary Long grants Admiral Dewey permission to return at once, relieved from Manila duties until the Philippine commission finishes. The ship will not wait for the next outward mail, mail handled by Mr Brevena in London to distribute mails to ships in European waters.
San Francisco May 16 The defense of the city is strengthened with a second battery of 16 mortars on the bluffs near Fort Winfield Scott. Eight large pieces are in place, others being mounted by Third artillery. The 12 inch breech loading mortars fire 1000 pound shells, larger than the previous battery. A 12 inch rifle and disappearing carriage are ready for shipment from the East. Additional modern guns will be positioned at the bay entrance when they arrive.
A Centralia coal breaker accident today killed four Hungarian workers and injured several others as a bank of coal collapsed. Rescue crews recovered the bodies, severely defiled, making identification difficult amid the large screening operation.
Manila dispatch reports General Lawton seizing San Ildefonso nine miles north of Balioag after a fierce assault on a well fortified Filipino defense. Fresh U S troops, including Seventeenth and Twenty first Infantry battalions, reinforce Mac Arthur and Lawton divisions. Admiral Dewey plans return to America aboard the Olympia, with command changes on several gunboats and ships.
Eugene Branton was hanged for the 1898 murder of John A Linn, in Condon, Gilliam County. The scene drew about 60 witnesses inside the jail yard and thousands outside, with Branton calm, prayerful, and giving family mementos before the trap. Separately, Manila dispatches report Filipino congress split on peace vs. independence terms, while a Tacoma man survives a high speed fall from a moving train and continues on.
The Hiegele Trust of Trenton New Jersey filed Articles of Incorporation with the secretary of State for the American Rileyela Company authorized capital stock 8000000. A deadly explosion at Kurta chemical works in St Helens Lancaster County Lord killed four and injured twenty. Fire spread to chlorate house causing massive damage and boiler blast razed the works with debris strewn everywhere. Estimated loss about 100000 pounds.
May 16 Manila reports describe tinclad Laguna de Bay and Cavadonga engaging insurgents along the Rio Grande near Calumpit with heavy fire. A Utah battery sergeant killed, one private wounded. 20 rebels killed, several wounded in an hour of combat.
In Shangehai on May 16 the Chinese Foreign Office replied to M. De Giers that China cannot agree to Russia’s request for a new Peking to Manchuria railway concession. The move would endanger British investments and contradict Chinese railway plans, signaling Russia's intent to assert influence despite a recent Britain China spheres agreement.
Washington reports Major General Otis outlines the Manila theater status in the Insurgent war. Lawton moves from Balipag to take Ildefonso and San Miguel, aiding 1,500 troops with gun boats and canoes under Robbe on the Rio Grande. MacArthur stays at San Fernando to guard the area. Aguinaldo asks to send a commission to Manila for peace talks with the US.
Under Secretary Longs orders the gun boats Annapolis and Vicksburg will leave training service and be refitted as gunboats. The Monongahela will sail the Atlantic coast and the Hartford and Pensacola will operate in Pacific waters to replace them.
