A note indicated the bonds belonged to Julius and Martin Britting and settled a long hostile heirs’ case. The find may claim treasure trove status for Lawson.
The U S Navy will provide continuous protection for American interests in Central America. Rear Admiral Hichborn will outfit the yacht Viking for service in shallow eastern waters near Honduras and Nicaragua to ensure the American flag flies at local ports. Acting Secretary Allen notes investigations into Americans refusing double duties in Nicaragua continue.
In Washington on May 8 the district jail executions of William Strather and Charles Winston proceeded quietly. Both men sang as they walked to the gallows and continued until the drop. Strather had killed Rose Talbot. Winston had shot his wife Emma.
Manila May 8 Second Oregon under Colonel Summers captured Maasin near San Miguel as Lawton’s main body reached the area. Casualties listed include killed and wounded from several regiments. rebels and Spanish prisoners report General Luna wounded and Filipino troops demoralized amid San Fernando defense and fires. General MacArthur moves his full command to San Fernando as Americans chase rebels through the town.
Aguinaldo's envoys admit U S sovereignty over the Philippines and surrender may be near. President Scherman reports the commission believes Aguinaldo is ready to yield, seeking assurances on local officers and government. Concessions urged would grant a U S style government.
May 8 report from Dulath notes first major demonstration by street railway strike sympathizers. Dynamite used to halt service, four cars derailed—three at West Dulath, one on Garfield avenue. One car smashed, another severely damaged, and multiple injuries reported including one serious or fatal. Additional text mentions Venezuela and Anglo-Russian talks.

New York reports Dewey will attend a 100 a plate banquet on his return as the cruiser Buffalo arrives from Manila in record time. Officers say Dewey is healthy and eager to lead the navy with peace near. Pottsville powder plant blast destroys 18 tons of powder. 14 tons at a second magazine and 4 tons in a drying house explode. total loss about $10,000.
The United States cruiser Buffalo docked in New York harbor with 604 officers and men from Dewey's fleet, over half of them veterans of Manila Bay. Some personnel have expired enlistment terms. Newark cruiser departed for the Philippines en route from Rio to Samos and May.
The Times reports the loan of 400000 pounds for the Tien-Tein Chin Kiang railway under Anglo German control has been successfully terminated according to the Beijing correspondent.
Washington May 9 press release shows military court findings on beef supplied to the army during the Spanish American War. It clears Secretary Alger of blame, censures General Miles for delaying notice, censures General Kagan for extensive canned beef purchases, and fines staffer Colonel Mays with no fault found on packers. The court recommends no further proceedings and notes some duty failings but says discipline serves the service.
In Spokane the Shoshone county miners may operate only if they do not hire members of the Coeur d Alene Mineral Union. General Merriam and Idaho Attorney General Hayes urge a crackdown on the union, citing crimes and outrages. Hayes vows to "clean up the Coeur d'Alenes" as martial law has been used twice.
American forces plan a task to clear Bacolor, five miles southwest of San Fernando, as rebel general Mascardo arrays 600 men. Rebels use labor squads and trenches while natives fortify positions.
