May Day Festival Ties Next Saturday at Pacific College

Pacific College hosts a full May Day program starting 6:30 AM with breakfast on the lawn, a parade through town, crown ceremony for May Queen Norma Harvey, and assorted drills. A 1:30 PM tennis match against Pacific University and a baseball game with the Chemawa Indians cap the day. Cafeteria picnic lunch and alumni tables are planned.

Changes in the College Faculty at Pacific College

The board accepts the resignation of Prof Mark C Mills head of history and political science as he pursues postgraduate work at Columbia. Miss Wright joins from Earlham College to head the history department at Fairmount Academy and pursue postgrad work at Wisconsin and Columbia. Miss Mary Eunice Lewis takes a leave of absence to finish a seminar for her master’s degree at California. Miss Mary C Sutton becomes acting professor of German with full charge of the German program. The board seeks a replacement for the vacant position.

Agricultural Defense Day Meeting Called by Governor

Farmers are urged to attend Agricultural Defense Day on Saturday May 12 per a governor proclamation. Local arrangements will set the meeting hour and place later. The message stresses wartime unity and cooperation with the government for national success.

During assembly week a recruiting officer, Mr. Oxley, spoke on patriotism inspiring several cadets to join. A heated debate on the student body constitution followed from 1 to 2 PM Friday, with a vote 27 against and 26 for. The motion to reconsider remains before the student body.

Farewell to Coast Artillery students departing for duty

The text notes that students including Harry Ockwell Earl Moore and Verne Howard will be sent to Vancouver then San Francisco for two weeks of training before being posted. They will join the Coast Artillery after leaving school on Monday morning.

Call of the Ministerial Assn Union Gospel Meetings At The Rink

The union gospel meetings at the rink are growing in power with earnest gospel work by ministers. Afternoon sessions run Tuesday to Friday at three, and a grand Union Mass Meeting is planned for Sunday at three. Citizens are urged to attend and support good citizenship.

Founders' Day Observance at Champoeg Set

The seventy fourth anniversary of Founders' Day and the seventeenth celebration will be held at Champoeg next Saturday under the Oregon Pioneer Association and Oregon Historical Society. Judge P H D Arcy of Salem will preside with addresses by Governor James Withycombe and Senator W D Wood among other pioneers. Fernwood band and Veteran Male Quartet will perform. a basket dinner is planned.

North Main Club Holds April Bi Monthly Meeting

The North Main Club met at Mountain View home of Mrs. George Range on April 25. The program featured a recital The Menace On Our Horizon a Sweet Day of Rest reading two pianoforte solos by Verna Range and a popular duet by Misses Alice and Nora Range. The next meeting will be at Bonaccord House May 9.

Anti narcotics program staged by WCTU unit

A WCTU gathering hosted by Mrs. Houghton and superintendent Mrs. Louisa Clark featured an anti narcotics program. About 25 S T L members entered with flags and performed a brief entertainment, followed by a vote of thanks. The next meeting is at 2 PM at Mrs. Sanders home 404 Hancock Street. All are invited.
