Oregon plans for 1919 to 1921 include 28.956 million dollars from federal and state sources for highway construction. Morrow County bonds add 1.060 million, with other counties proposing 2.64 million, contracts awarded reach 2.359 million, and priority given to returning soldiers for immediate work.
A Finance director announces a Methodist drive totaling 140 million dollars with 105 million for the Episcopal church and 35 million for the southern branch. Funds will support home and foreign missions, church centers, education, and postwar reconstruction in Europe.
Spirit Lake in Washington hosts a second group of Forest Service surveyed sites for summer use including 41 cabins and a hotel site. The area, about one fourth mile from a Portland YMCA unit and six miles from Mount St Helens, offers camping, boating, fishing, and hiking with access to nearby recreation.
Mr and Mrs Melvin Oliphant near Dayton celebrated their fortieth wedding anniversary on March 23 with family and friends. Grandsons presented gifts from a basket as Mrs Ella Taylor sang, followed by a surprise visit from granddaughters dressed as fairies bearing cards from relatives in Massachusetts Illinois Minnesota California and elsewhere. A sumptuous dinner followed.
A Davenport farmer reports strong profits from a flock of 400 Lincoln lambs with $609 initial stock and $2,100 invested in 11 miles of woven wire fencing. Over three years he earned $1,978 from wool and lambs, plus 24 lambs for home use, while noting weed control and fertilization benefits.
Ralph Parlette brings a lyceum program to Wood-Mar Hall on Tuesday night April 8 addressing big business, happiness, inner growth, and social themes. The talk promises insights on success, community, and personal illumination with tickets at Kienle’s Music Store and general admission 35 cents.
Mrs. L. M. Nye hosted the North Main Improvement Club meeting on March 19 as members decided to join the Women’s Legislative Council of Newberg. Representatives are Mrs. Moffitt Mrs. Hulin and Mrs. Thorne with alternates Mrs. Jones Mrs. Badley and Mrs. Budd. Pineapple Bavarian cream cake and coffee were served. The next meeting will be with Mrs. Thorne on April 2.
The American Red Cross launches a nationwide effort to gather 10 000 tons of used clothing shoes blankets and other textiles for refugees and war victims across Northern France Belgium Italy and more Oregon leads a state drive coordinated by the Portland chapter with civic clubs and the Rotary Club assisting. Teachers and Junior Red Cross groups boost participation as schools are urged to unite and ship garments to aid the suffering.
Fifty five thousand Oregon children are now part of the American Junior Red Cross with Multnomah and Clackamas counties leading participation. The Port land chapter notes 81189 in Portland and 136 for Tillamook while detailing a five week squires program followed by ten weeks as knights and 15 weeks as knight bannerets, all tracked by the Crusaders themselves.
The seven part production The Finger of Justice by Rev. Paul Smith of San Francisco promotes an anti-vice campaign across California via the State Law Enforcement League. Proceeds fund rehabilitation with Smith Jewett and Brummitt directing. youth under sixteen must be accompanied today April 2.
The Presbyterian church auditorium overflowed as Miss Britt presented pupils in a piano recital. Lucile Bassett played Greig To Spring with fine interpretation, Euphemia Boyes offered Second Valse by Durand with brilliancy, and junior students Wilma Cornell Edith Fort earned praise. Mrs Charles A Morris sang several numbers with Miss Britt on piano, Lite Bernice Newhouse gave a humorous reading, and more pupils appeared. The next recital is set for April 7.
J. W. Brewer, farm help specialist for federal and O A C extension, warns that trained farm labor is scarce early in the season. He cautions that when spring work peaks the shortage will intensify and urges farmers to send applications to the Portland office detailing the type of work needed.
Nightly services continue this week and next at the Free Methodist Church led by Rev. Walter T. Klotsback. The preaching emphasizes old time gospel power with a 7 30 p m start each evening and invites friends to attend.
