Asa Kelsey writes from Ramallah about wartime misery under Ottoman censorship, population displacement, and brutal measures against Jews and others. He recalls family danger, shattered commerce, and social upheaval as Turkish mobilization disrupts daily life and threatens Christian and Jewish communities.

Chas. LeBrun bought a stone engine to pull six plows and harrows on his land and neighbors at St. Louis. He plans 490 acres of oats and 190 acres of clover with the engine equating 25 horses of work. The purchase marks a new, enterprising step for local agriculture.

J. A. Bryan of Dilly and Mrs. B. O. Van Osdol of Newberg visited their daughter and sister Mrs. Riley Boyd who has been in poor health. Bryan, famed as a crack violinist in Chehalem Valley years ago, performed for the News office and left impressionable tunes.

The Newberg Red and Gun Club hosted the Fred Gilbert cup shooting last Friday. A M Davis won with a high score and a silver loving cup. Van Arnam of Winchester Cartridge Co. demonstrated strong shooting, breaking 49 of 50 targets. Final scores include Davis 8.2, Nelson 7.9, Kincaid 7.8, Amos Nelson 7.7, McDonald 7.0, Ferguson 6.8, Littlefield 6.3, Woodcock 9.2, Van Arnam 9.3.
