Newberg Carnegie Free Library hosted a social reception last Friday to raise books and donations. Patrons toured rooms, enjoyed music by Corrinne Bartholomew and others, and heard speeches on library value while a long list of donors was acknowledged and invited to contribute again.

Old Soldier George W. Hunter Dies At 82 In Newberg
George W. Hunter born July 3, 1831 in Liberty Indiana died May 31 1913. He served in the 15th Illinois Infantry and lived in Iowa Silverton Oregon Salem Newberg and North Plains. Survived by wife Adalade and children Alice Poe and George M Hunter with grandchildren and great grandchildren. Funeral at Hollingsworth chapel conducted by Rev Ezra Hayes with G A R veterans present.

Harmony Public Improve ment Society visits Newberg for civic tour
The Harmony Public Improvement Society of Portland toured Kilton Floral Co north of Newberg on a special car, joining Newberg’s Civic Improvement Club for a picnic under maples. Members praised Newberg’s prosperity and improvements, with details on club officers and attendees. The Yamhill Polk field meet in McMinnville featured strong performances, including Ray Peffer’s hammer 158 feet breaking the Northwest high school mark.

Narrow Escape at Lafayette Locks
Two 17 year old boys Ersel Grimer and Fay Doughtry narrowly escaped a drowning at the Yamhill locks below Lafayette. Their boat broke the row lock as they crossed near the dam, the craft capsized 18 feet over the falls, but they clung to the boat and were rescued by observers with a rope. Doughtry even kept his hat on during the ordeal.

Death of Chancelor Johnson Aged 14 In Oregon
Chancelor Randolph Johnson born August 1 1898 on a Yamhill County farm near Newberg died June 3 1913 at Chehalem Center aged 14 years 10 months 2 days. He leaves a mother three brothers Frank Carlos Edward a sister Marguerite and many relatives. Funeral services were held at Chehalem Center church Wednesday at 10 o clock with interment in Newberg cemetery conducted by Pastor Walter H Wilson.

Commencement Week Closing Concert Set In College Chapel
The college music department will hold its closing concert next Monday evening June 9 in the college chapel. Admission is free and expected large crowds will attend. The Music Department faculty will be joined by Miss Mary Jones Miss Dorothy Hull and Prof Hawkins. Hawkins will deliver readings while the program features Nutcracker Suite and Cadman selections.

Memorial Day Observed With Flowers and Addresses
The day honored deceased veterans with cemetery flowers and a parade led by a band to the city of the dead. In the afternoon Friends church hosted a music program followed by Lincoln's Gettysburg Address read by C. W. Sloan and an oration by Rev. Charles O. Whitley.
