Newberg's business leaders and residents gathered at Wood-Mar Hall for a campaign to strengthen Pacific College endowment. Speakers stressed vision, local support, and cost savings by enrolling locally, urging liberal contributions to place the college on a solid financial footing.
Tuesday evening in Wood-Mar Hall featured a closing recital by the college music department. Mrs. Hull presented younger pupils with strong technique and stage presence, followed by an engaging program from older students. The concert concluded with a piano violin cello suite performed by Glenn Taylor Royal Gettman Mrs. Hull and Prof. Hull that drew enthusiastic applause.
Thirty years ago a large crowd on First Street met Thursday evening to remove the flag pole and install new ropes and pulleys. Luke McKern plans to build a residence on his farm joining the old days and tough travels from 1845 to 1850. J L Hoskins named census enumerator for West Chehalem Wheatland and Willamina districts as Frank Wood and their crew push progress on the Chehalem Creek bridge.
Mrs Josephine McPoland a Newberg resident died May 25 after long illness born December 11 1862 in Champoeg. She married P J McPoland June 10 1879 and had two sons both predeceased. Funeral at St Peters Church May 27 officiated by Rev Hanson. Survived by husband two brothers a half sister and many nieces and nephews. Regatta comes to Newberg Friday and Saturday.
The Portland Motor Boat Club guests the city with a full regatta program in Newberg featuring college exhibition games, street jubilees, auto and motorcycle races, foot races, a coronation, water sports with prize cups, and a reception at the Commercial Club followed by a dance at the American Legion hall.
Queen Dorothy will be crowned queen of the Regatta at Oak Grove Park after the parade. The committee has kept the king’s identity secret amid much speculation about the lucky man.
A major parade is scheduled at 16 a.m. with Queen Dorothy and her Royal Court leading 35 floats from Newberg merchants plus numerous decorated cars. Prizes include 15 dollars for best float and 15 dollars for best decorated car. Cars and floats must report by 9 30 a.m. Parade routes through College Sheridan Meridian First Washington Hancock Main First Center Second River Church Portland Highway College Fifth Oak Grove Park. A new concrete bridge dedication will follow the parade with a mayoral proclamation and a notable speaker.
The Oregon Growers Co operative Association reports half built prune processing plant at Dallas and land secured at Forest Grove for a new prune facility. They will repurpose Grants Pass and Medford areas, close berry and cherry contracts for 1920, and cap apple and pear contracts June 1. Total membership reaches 1,300 with over 26 000 acres of fruit and 700 acres added near Salem after Salem Fruit Union dissolution.
Mrs Irene Everest Heater celebrated her eightieth birthday at her Newberg area home along with grandson Elden Everest's sixteenth birthday. Family members from Portland Willamina Laurel Vancouver and Dundes gathered for lunch and cake as a chilly day moved plans indoors.
The annual commencement concert will be held Saturday evening June 5 at eight o'clock in Wood-Mar Hall. Admission is free for the Newberg audience. The program lasts about an hour featuring Mrs. Hull, Prof. Alexander Hull, Glenn Taylor on violin, and Miss Dorothy Hull on piano. The pieces include Gurlitt two piano Rondo, The Flowers Bed Time and other songs, St Saens Danse Macabre, Rimsky Korsakov On the Georgian Hills, Rachmaninoff The Billowy Harvest Field, Schumann Night Song, and Bach Bourree.
Pacific College defeated McMinnville College 3 to 2 on McMinnville soil last Friday afternoon. Pitcher Pil for Pacific College struck out eighteen and allowed one walk, while Dowd and Ves fanned several for McMinnville. Pacific College will host Pacific University next Friday at one PM, in a rematch following a 2 1 win by Pacific College.
The Pacific College commencement week program lists events from June 5 to June 9. Highlights include a music recital at Wood-Mar Hall, sermons at Friends Church, and campus ceremonies with speakers Rev Charles Lescault and President Levi T Pennington.
Robert Nowe of Lents with Grace Kock 22 and Florence Kock 14 sisters were riding when the car driven by Nowe lost a wheel on the highway near Newberg. The vehicle rolled over throwing them out. They were taken to Good Samaritan hospital in Portland with injuries described as not serious.
Horace Newlin of Springbrook is reported to be in a very low condition due to Brights disease with no hope for recovery.
W D Miller of Local Standard Oil Co says Newberg will have enough gas for June. Dealers report dwindling stocks, urging conservation as Portland groups plan a publicity campaign amid a Midwest refinery development in Richmond California costing ten million dollars to increase output.
Statewide Oregon Chamber of Commerce drive aims to develop the state through advertising land settlement irrigation road and highway projects and cooperation with agricultural and lumber interests. Newberg Executive Committee selects George L. Kelly as chairman with S L Parrett U S G Miller W H Woodworth and E C Baird among its officers.
A summary of notable American firsts from 1639 to 1886 including the first printing press in Cambridge by Stephen Daye, the Penny Packet in 1781, the first theater in Williamsburg, the first vestibule train, and early umbrellas import from India. Also notes the first apartment building at 142 East Eighteenth Street and early steam ferries between New York and Brooklyn.
The American Legion Auxiliary hosts a chicken dinner at the Legion hall on Saturday at noon June 5 1920. The Queen and her maids the King and his attendants will be the guests of the day. Dinner cost 60 cents with reduced prices for children.
