Great Britain Germany and Belgium will send mine authorities to the United States to assist the Geologic Survey. They will tour Pennsylvania Illinois Wyoming Colorado Alabama West Virginia and Ohio to learn mining conditions and help set up experiment stations to prevent disasters and reduce fatalities. The arrival is expected in late August with collaboration from the State Department and U S authorities.
A 200 foot section of the San Joaquin river levee failed near Antioch California flooding the Jersey Island tract east of town. about 4000 acres are underwater with losses around 50000 dollars impacting the Jersey Island company and many leaseholders. Celery fields 8000 carloads ready to harvest and 500 acres of potatoes are ruined along with drainage ditches and young plants. The event devastates what was to be a major celery operation in the state.
Mount Airy Ga July 28 Judge Speer of the United States court granted restraining orders on application by the Macon Grocery and other Georgia merchants restraining several railroad companies from raising rates on staple shipments from Western to Southern points. The railroads had notified the Interstate Commerce Commission the increases would take effect August 1. Speer will hear arguments July 29 at Mount Airy. If upheld the rise could cost Georgia shippers and buyers 500000 to 1000000 dollars yearly.
London July 28 Earl Grey governor general of Canada reports that speeches by Vice President Fairbanks and a French representative reached a high note of friendship toward Canada and the crown. He adds satisfaction from American marine detachments in the review.
Portland reports Siuslaw and Coquille residents push federal jetty plans to improve harbor channels. J B Cushman of Siuslaw discusses river dredging limits, seeks engineer aid from Major McIndoe, with $100000 pledged in Coquille for jetty and bulkheading.
Albany reports Linn county farm lands attracting strong buyers with rising values. W. M. Lloyd of Tangent sold a 363 acre pasture farm for 11000, after buying it for 900. Five years earlier it went for 9000, two years ago for 8000. Several top Linn farms changed hands recently amid steady demand as homeseekers tour the countryside seeking farms to purchase and settle on.
Three thousand blocks have arrived in Albany for the new depot. Work on the grounds is progressing rapidly and requires immediate laying of the blocks. T. H. Ellis of Eugene is the contractor overseeing block production, with a large force of men busy on the site.
Fire broke out in the woods near the Peninsula Lumber camp five miles west of Columbia City. Fire spread beyond control as 200 acres of timber burned. the company’s entire force worked to protect roadbed and equipment. All donkey engines and equipment were saved.
Salem report notes S P Kimball, a leading cherry grower near Salem, completed a dryer with daily capacity of 300 bushels. He installed the unit due to a poor market and expects dried Royal Annes to yield higher profit than fresh at 3 cents per pound.
A Baker City committee of N C Haskell W J Patterson and Sam Baer raised over 1000 to buy land for a new 200 barrel flouring mill to be built by G B Stout of Paoli. Stout asked the city to donate a mill site and promised a modern mill.
In Whan Chang the Corean who shot Durham White Stevens on March 23 in San Francisco faced a murder trial in Superior court before Judge Carroll Cook. Stevens, diplomatic advisor to the Corean emperor at Seoul, died March 26 after being shot while nearing a ferry to Washington.
Track laying has resumed on the California Northeastern railway and steel is laid over the hill beyond Harris where the terminus currently stands. Worden station, near the swamp, is likely to become the next terminus, shortening freight and stage road travel into the city.
In Yusovo July 28 officers recovering from the Ripovaky mine explosion that killed nearly 200 men found counterfeiting tools and a stash of spurious money. Investigators suspect the counterfeiters may be connected to the disaster.
