Newberg Graphic notes campaign talk and oddities
The Newberg Graphic for Friday July 17 1896 surveys campaign chatter in Oregon including Bryan and Teller opinions at the Chicago convention. It spoofs politicians, mentions Willamette navigation costs, Sezodont boat tests, and a humorous tale of a bachelor teased by a club for not marrying.
Nine Votes Cast In Club Elects No Bride
A secret vote among nine club members chose no wife for the suitor as each girl received one vote and the bachelor remains. At the Chicago convention Hon. W J Bryan of Nebraska was nominated for president and Arthur Sewell of Maine for vice president on a 16 to 1 silver coinage platform. The silver wing is satisfied while gold supporters denounce Bryan as unworthy and populist. The populist convention is expected to endorse Bryan and Sewell. Gold Democrats seem undecided.
