In Roseburg Oregon John Becker killed himself after setting his house ablaze and assaulting his wife, with his teenage son seizing the revolver. Becker’s body was found near his home after he fled. Arlington Oregon July 20 Word arrives that Lone Rock on Long Creek in Gilliam county was nearly wiped out by fire yesterday The entire business district burned leaving only a few outlying dwellings intact The town started in 1870 and lies twenty six miles southeast of Condon sixty miles from Arlington and thirty five miles from Heppner with a daily mail and stage service to Arlington.
A ferry boat carrying ore handlers sank after being swamped by a steamer wash near the Cleveland and Pittsburgh Railway ore dock. Initial counts suggested twenty two dead, later reduced to fourteen recovered with bodies still dragged from the river. One prominent victim, William Bueley, drowned after falling from an abutment.
Washington July 20 Colonel J M Wilson superintendent of government buildings and grounds urges Congress to appropriate 260000 for a granite executive office within the presidential grounds opposite the treasury.
