Hammondsport New York July 7 The Curtiss June Bug earned the right to be the first name on the Scientific American trophy for a official one kilometer straight line flight. The plane flew 1700 yards including a 600 yard extension after crossing the finish line with a two thousand yard S shaped glide. About 1000 spectators witnessed the test conducted with calm winds and smooth air. The trial marks the first official airplane test in America.

Socialist Party Nominates Preston for President at National Convention
New York July 7 The Socialist national committee named Martin R. Preston of Nevada for president and Donald Munro of Virginia for vice president. Preston’s nomination was unanimous after D de Leon praised him as an honest working man amid a controversial claim of a 25 year jail sentence for shooting a restaurant keeper in Goldfield during a strike.

Port au Prince Fire Destroys Courthouse and Prison
A major blaze in Port au Prince near the Palace and Senate district yesterday burned four hundred structures as a high wind fanned the flames. The courthouse and prison were destroyed and guards evacuated inmates including several women. Sparks reached the arsenal and ammunition stores were lost in the fire.

228 Bodies Recovered From Rikosky Coal Mine Disaster

Edward Anderson of the foothills near Weston devises a sulfur and match method to exterminate squirrels. He places paper slips and a teaspoon of sulfur at each burrow, then lights it and covers the hole with dirt and weeds. One pound of sulfur can kill about 200 squirrels.

Road work resumes on Pacific Railway between here and Tillamook
Contractors have surveyed the Pacific Railway and Navigation line from this point to Tillamook and indicate resumed construction is near. About 20 miles of road are finished outward, and six months of uninterrupted work would finish the grade and bridge into Tillamook.
