The Army Re organization bill expands court martial authority to try civilians for contempt. The change drops the prior limit that kept civilians from military trials, enabling punishment by fine or imprisonment, and reflecting a shift in the balance of military and civil authority debated in Congress.
On last Sunday 77 year old Christopher F. Yeager fell from a cherry tree at his home across the Willamette river from Dundee. He suffered multiple broken ribs and internal injuries and died. He long operated Yeager's ferry on the river. Funeral services were held at Hollingsworth Co chapel Wednesday morning.
Fred E. Carter will speak Sunday morning on The God We Forget and evening on Is there a God If 80 Who Is He. All who do not attend church elsewhere are invited to hear these subjects discussed as they relate to present day conditions.
A five member deputation team from La Verne College California will lead the Sunday school hour and the morning preaching service on Sunday July 18. The program focuses on missionary and educational themes and all interested are cordial invited to attend.
A large Newberg crowd attended an orderly Independence Day event led by American Legion members. Major Hopfield and Capt. Hogan spoke, stressing education for native and immigrant children and fair treatment. An afternoon baseball game on the college campus saw Newberg beat McMinnville 5 to 0 with Garland pitching a no hit no run game.
About thirty relatives gathered in Fernwood to celebrate W A Parrish’s birthday. He has passed the half century mark, yet enjoyed a bountiful spread and a merrier mood than age might suggest.
Beginning Monday next week season tickets for the Chau tauqua opening July 21 will be sold at banks and drug stores. Those who signed up last year should call soon to ease delivery. A Friday 8pm meeting at the council room will organize the guarantee group and appoint committees with J H Hopper and W W Silver present.
Cecil Leonard Chapman and Miss Clara Melissa Kimber wed in Dundee with Rev. J H Gillespie officiating. Ferns and flowers adorned the rooms, a post ceremony dinner was served near the residence, and the couple now stay at the Commercial hotel as Chapman plans to attend school in Portland.
In a Union County statement Senator Pierce argues against state owned packing plants and stores, warning that the Non Partisan League aims to regulate prices and expand government control. He warns socialism threatens individual rights and cites past votes on single tax and regional moves.
