Salem reports U'Ren preparing measures to amend Oregon laws while Hawley helps display a large Washington General Land Office map at the Graphic. Bourne’s Salem ties linger from 1896 Eldridge Block era, and Wisconsin proposes suffragettes wear breeches to ease controversy.
In a familiar critique the Graphic urges caution on House Bill No. 77 by Brownhill proposing uniform county offices. The writer warns the measure could trigger erratic initiative activity every two years and argues Oregon already has a surfeit of such reforms.
A horticulturist told the writer that uniting producers in this community for mutual benefit is harder here than elsewhere in Oregon. Past attempts at permanent organization have failed more often than not. The piece calls for a concerted get together campaign, a house warming, and even an outside evangelist to spark unity among producers.
The legislature considers a two hundred thousand dollar plan to fund a permanent fireproof home for the Oregon Historical Society. The bill requires a matching 100000 from Portland citizens and would honor Oregon pioneers with a Memorial Building site. The society lists extensive accessions gathered since 1898 and notes visitors from across the nation, urging a permanent home for regional history.
A Butte judge urges parents to guard their children's welfare and curb night street loitering and risky behavior. He stresses guidance beyond physical care, noting some youths lack guardians and highlighting community stakes and reform through proper parental interest.
In Roslyn Washington Matt Harrison carried a powder can into his home while smoking a cigarette. A blast killed one child and left four others dying while his wife and mother-in-law lay seriously injured. Harrison escaped unharmed.
Goodwill gifts to universities by Rockefeller Carnegie and Harvard founder John Harvard are noted, but the piece urges new bequests to fund concise state and national histories. It argues prizes for state histories, a political history, and a guide on federal versus state powers, to raise public knowledge and reduce prejudice, in Goodwin's Weekly.
Announcement of the new Fair five ten fifteen twenty five cent store opening in Newberg in the Purdy building on First street next to Bean's grocery. It will offer a year round line while waiting for full spring and summer stock and invites the public to get acquainted as they settle in. White horses are barred from service in the German army due to smokeless powder conspicuousness.
