Soldier writes from Fort Omaha about Christmas and flight training

Fort Omaha Nebraska December 28 1917 Dear Grandma I received your letter and the helmet and housewife. The helmet is heavier and I returned the lighter one to the Red Cross. It has turned cold with a north wind and tents are hard to keep warm. We had a fine Christmas dinner at the Fort. Since then I have been busy with exams and red tape to enter the officers reserve as a flyer in the aviation corps. If I pass I will train for six months and may become a first or second lieutenant earning 2000 or 1700 dollars a year with a 20 percent raise for foreign service. The test was the hardest in the U S army and about half of the 32 passed. Your grandson Sewell Newhouse.
