The Oregon W C T U held a mid year executive meeting in Portland with delegates from Douglas Lane Yamhill Clackamas and Multnomah counties. National guests from Seattle Los Angeles Kansas City and Washington D C toured and spoke on citizenship child welfare and temperance.
The Lincoln anniversary event drew sixteen attendees due to bad weather. A noon banquet hosted by the W R C and G A R served 135 guests. An afternoon program featured readings including Gettysburg Address, music, and an actress, with veterans recalling Lincoln. Frances Woodruff presented a plant to the oldest Shiloh Post member, Comrade Charles True.
A humorous verse extols Oregon prunes praising their greatness and uniqueness. The author J Akers from Newberg Oregon imagines national demand rising as the prunes are celebrated in verse.
Noted singer George R. Garner Jr. leads a celebrated colored tenor ensemble praised as America’s finest by Music News of Chicago. Garner, manager and artist, impressed audiences at the Ziegfeld Theatre and is lauded for voice richness and artistic finesse by S Eugene Whiteside Carl D Kinsey and others in Chicago.
On February 15 at the Commercial Hotel dining room two Newberg misses Helen Sanders and Mabel Anderson hosted a Valentine party for a large group of school friends. Refreshments and games provided entertainment while guests praised the hosts for a memorable evening. Dr. A. L. Grinell, a returned missionary from China and physician surgeon, will speak at the Free Methodist church next Sunday at 11:00 AM and 2:30 PM, with an address to the young people Monday evening. Public welcome, especially Berg young peoples societies. The church runs a hospital in Honan province for his use and he will share experiences.
Prune Week highlights Oregon prunes as a major national supply, produced mainly in Willamette valley and Clarke county. The piece urges naming Oregon prune as a trade name, expanding credit through Newberg banks, and promoting preparation methods and sample distribution to grow markets beyond California.
Tuesday evening at the Presbyterian church featured a piano recital directed by Mies Britt. The program closed with violin accompaniment by Glen Taylor and hints of another recital planned in a few months.
