The new mayor pledges honest fearless service for Newberg, aiming to study conditions before acting. He outlines goals including restoring harmony, fair water rates, fair licenses for merchants and trucks, and plans for a public auditorium, parks, and libraries to attract growth. The Double Six of Odd Fellowship will present an eight o'clock program next Tuesday in their hall. The Portland Odd Fellows band of 40 instruments will join to enhance the festivities with top talent from local lodges. All Odd Fellows and Rebekahs and invited friends should bring boxes of cats and stay for the late hours of merriment.
The Newberg city council installed newly elected officials Monday night. Mayor S. M. Calkins outlined policy in an inaugural paper. Councilman E. C. Baird declined to serve. L. F. Moore continues. Ward representatives are Palmer and Ormond. Moore and Kelty. Bales and Lowe. Edwards and Otis. A committee Edwards Ormond Kelly was appointed to study water rates. sidewalks and fire equipment bonds were authorized. The council aims to promptly address business matters with civic pride and citizen approval.
A December 14 social in Duncan's hall promises the best season gathering with dishes provided. All who have lived in Wisconsin or Nebraska are welcome. doors open at ten o'clock to receive guests and handle baskets. The association lays on coffee and food supplies and table covers.
A Tuesday evening recital at the Presbyterian church on December 14 features piano numbers by Miss Britt's pupils, vocal selections by Mrs. Captalin Grissen's students, and readings by Mrs. Chas. Morris's pupils. Lewellyn Sanderman assists. admission is free and the public is invited.
Portland judge Kanzler will address a Newberg audience at the Commercial Club rooms Friday evening. He speaks from broad experience with Oregon’s homeless children and will outline their needs, promising a full house turnout.
Public invited Friday night to hear Judge Kanzler speak in support of a 125000 fund drive to establish a farm home for orphaned and dependent children in Oregon. The W C T U already operates the Portland baby home and Florence Crittenton home and aims to complete the campaign by week’s end.
A veteran printer, A. J. Shrader, after four years at the Graphic, departs due to his wife's failing health requiring a move to California. His career began in 1862 at the Hartford City Union in Indiana, with long stints in Muncie Illinois Wisconsin Iowa California and Newberg before joining the Graphic. He is described as an efficient newspaper man whose work spanned multiple states and roles.

Members of the Oregon Growers Association will gather at the Commercial Club room on Saturday at 1 30 p m. Several leading officials will be present. All members are urged to attend.
Henry Hartman of Oregon Agriculture College declares Franquette walnuts the best variety for Oregon based on tests, though incomplete. He cites Mayette as a close second and notes grafted trees are needed for uniform orchards while seed-grown trees show wide variation and late blooming risks.
Reverend Herbert T. Cash of Portland died suddenly last Sunday morning from heart trouble while preparing for church. Funeral services were held at East Baptist church. Born in England and educated in Canada, he came to Oregon in 1891 and studied at Pacific College. He served as pastor in Newberg and Paonia Colorado before returning to Oregon and was associate pastor at East Side Baptist church at his death. He is survived by his widow three sons and two daughters, the latter twins.
Mr and Mrs William Sargent will celebrate their fiftieth wedding anniversary on Tuesday at their home 611 West Sheridan Street Friends are invited to call between 2:00 and 5:00 PM.
A music recital by the little folks is set at WoodMar Hall next Monday evening December 13 at 7 45 oclock sharp. Later in the year the older students will appear in recital. Come and enjoy the recital with them.

Frank Newland of Willamina was arrested Tuesday for driving without a license. He paid a $10 fine after arraignment. He had just bought the car in Portland and, while driving west on First Street, lost control near College Street, smashing a windshield pane at the Newbery Meat Co. corner but escaping injury.

The Newberg Farmers' club met at the A Rupert Co cannery hall last Saturday with many farmers present. President Bradshaw spoke on club work, Kilham urged agricultural cooperation, and W A Frost of the cannery discussed grower cannery relations and pricing. He endorsed organized grower clubs and urged careful planting of loganberries and strawberries, with other fruit recommendations and future industry optimism.
Springbrook Friends present a Friday evening program at 7 30 featuring Chinese and Japanese costumes a male sextette a Japanese drill recitations and more. Admission is free but attendees may offer to help cover expenses.
The city held last Thursday votes on a Two Mill tax and a charter amendment plus fire equipment and cow ordinance proposals. Results show Yes and No tallies with fire equipment and cow items passing or failing accordingly.
