Chain Letter Origin in New South Wales Hospital Fund
In New South Wales the Griffin family started a chain letter to raise funds for St George’s Cottage Hospital by sending ten used stamps and urging three friends to continue. The scheme grew worldwide, threatening postal service and prompting disposal of millions of letters. Mail bags stored unopened were sold to stamp dealers for about $275, with subsequent sales to collectors in Australia and the United States.
