About two hundred people gathered Tuesday night at the Baptist church to welcome Rev. F C Stannard and his family for his third term in Newberg. The mayor and church representatives spoke warmly, praising his call to service and urging support for the pastor and the community.
Ben W Olcott secretary of state warns 1916 motor vehicle registration is progressing slowly as only 2700 applications have been received with about 31000 more needed in the one month left to issue plates. He urges early submissions to avoid inconvenience.
At a November 26 1915 meeting of Shiloh Woman's Relief Corps No 28 unanimous resolutions mourn the death of sister Lethe M Ames of Normal Nebraska who died October 23 1915. The charter is to be draped in mourning for 30 days and condolences are extended to her family with copies sent to the minutes press and sorrowing relatives.
A last week gathering at Wynooski Street ends with a surprise marriage as Olive Perkins and Clarence Bishop wed in the Bishop residence after a music filled evening. Guests include the Perkins and Owen families and Portland and Oregon City attendees. The couple plans to travel to Portland then a ranch near North Yakima Washington. Also noted is a Portland Y M C A council meeting to arrange a basketball schedule among Willamette and Pacific institutions.
Students and friends gathered at the dormitory parlor Friday evening to hear Mr and Mrs Robert L Simpkin and their Chinese traveling companion discuss educational work supported by united denominational efforts in West P C and the presence of the Physical Education Council of the Independent Colleges of Ore.
The county plans to spend about 27 500 on bridge construction next year. The court will allocate 15 000 for a concrete bridge over Cozine Creek near the McMinnville hospital. Other bridges include Island 6 000 Bertram 2 500 Crawford 500 near Newberg 600 Canfield 1 060 and several small structures. Road tax levy expected to be about five mills.
The evangelistic meeting led by Mary Jane Newlin on November 26 inspired prayer and Bible reading at home. Four new members joined the union, with a December 7 reception at the Baptist church set for white ribboners.
The first music recital of the season will be given by advanced pupils in Wood-Mar Hall next Monday evening at 8 o clock on December 6. All are invited and admission is free.
F Howard Hillman shot and killed his wife at their Amity farm home and then died by his own hand shortly after. The couple hosted Thanksgiving guests including Ralph Marvin family and J C Hillman. A quarrel in the house led to two rifle shots. a child witnessed part of the drama. Hillman, 37, owned a moving picture theater in Amity and had lived in Spokane previously. He belonged to several local orders.
Wednesday forenoon Frank Deach teaches at No 47 and has introduced manual training. The board’s $100 funding is transforming the basement into a workshop and engaging students. The district shows strong interest as agriculture experiments continue under the superintendent.
Judge Rolland A. Russell of Bloomington Illinois will speak on The Fine Art of Living at the Lyceum course Thursday night December 9 He replaces Harry W Arnold who has been compelled to give up platform speaking due to ill health
Tuesday in Ashland E I Kaiser post master was shot twice in the head by William Greenfield’s clerk in the office. Greenfield then shot himself in the mouth and died two hours later. Kaiser, founder and longtime editor of the Ashland Record, was recovering. The men had been friends and Greenfield's mental balance is blamed.
The C. E. Society of the Christian Church will hold its regular monthly social Friday evening in the tabernacle basement. There is no charge, but the program is unusually interesting and refreshments will be appetizing.
