The Philadelphia sails from New York July 10 and reaches Cherbourg then Southampton en route to London. Quaker travelers absorb England through Winchester and the Isle of Wight with visits to Godbegot House and Wolvesey Castle, noting English hospitality and historic echoes in the landscape.
The narrator sails from Seattle on the freighter Steamer Jefferson with 125 passengers. Captain Livingstone his crew and entertaining past master Cap Norde are described as lively and capable.
