News from the Orient reports that in early July rebels defeated imperial Chinese troops at Wu Chow. Over 1,500 soldiers were slain and bodies cast into the river. British steamer Toledo sinks after collision near Grim Rock
The British steamship Toledo, Captain W. Shart, from Galveston to Rotterdam, struck Grim Rock in dense fog off the Sicily islands and foundered in 26 fathoms. All aboard evacuated in a single lifeboat, many in night clothes. Built 1882 in Sunderland for John Tolly, registered 1,818 tons gross.
