Steamer State of California wrecked near Gambier Bay
The iron steamship State of California sank after striking an uncharted rock in Gambier Bay 90 miles south of Juneau. Seventy six passengers were aboard from Seattle to Skagway and Juneau. forty were killed and seven crew members died. The Jefferson rescued survivors, and the ship, built in 1879, is a total loss valued at $400,000 with 52 crew.

She suffered a broken arm a fractured shoulder and severe scalp wounds but was recovering. witnesses cited her defective vision and hearing as contributing factors. Engineer Casey managed to stop the train within feet, preventing a worse outcome.
