Oregon Day Parade Demonstrates Dry Column Support in Newberg
On Sunday Newberg residents staged the first outdoor pro temperance demonstration in support of Oregon joining the dry column. More than five hundred people marched from First and Washington to the city park where Mrs. L A Moore led exercises by the W C T U and Kienle's orchestra provided music. Readings by Miss Bullard Miss Bessie King and Mrs Cora Diedericks preceded short talks by Bert Miller and Teddy Leavitt as children performed. That night Jack Frost of McMinnville presented stereoptical views and the tale Ten Nights in a Bar Room with accompanying scenes and a lecture ready for further travels to schools and remote areas.

John C. Hiatt founder of the Whittier Graphic in 1888 died August 2 in Rivera California at age 74. He helped launch Southern California journalism as early as Whittier and moved the plant to Newberg. His son William Hiatt, now an attorney in Los Angeles, helped run the paper. Hiatt was born an Indian man by birth, lived largely in Iowa before California, a Civil War veteran and prisoner at Andersonville and Libby.
