Oregon's 1920 population reached 783 285, up 110 520 or 16 4 percent from 1910. The gain cannot be compared with other western states yet, as Oregon is the first western state to announce totals.
The W C T U honored Mrs Victoria Hazelton at her former 407 South School street home before her move to Ransom Kansas on August 16. The surprise gathering praised her lifelong temperance work and featured ice cream and cake as friends recalled fifty years of service and knowledge. G W Range bought property in McMinnville and will relocate with family soon.
A Sunday afternoon Y M C A meeting at the Baptist Church showcased a year of work in Marion County and the launch of the Yamhill County effort. A. E. Austin led the report with support from Dr. Frank E. Brown and W. P. Walter, while visitors from McMinnville joined the gathering to discuss regional Y M C A plans.

Samuel Minchin, about 75, was struck by a southbound passenger train at a crossing east of his Dundee area home and killed instantly. His cow also died. the train traveled about 40 mph. The coroner ordered an inquest in McMinnville. Funeral at Dundee church at 2 30 P M conducted by Rev. Fred E Carter. He leaves a widow, two sons W F Willamina and Ewood S Portland, and a daughter Edith. another daughter died earlier. The Minchin family moved from Canada about twenty years ago to the area above Dundee.
The Pacific Northwest faces acute shipping problems due to high freight rates and railroad equipment shortages. The Oregon State Chamber of Commerce urges immediate action to develop steamship lines and harbor facilities, improve harbors, and boost shipping to benefit lumber farmers and manufacturers.
The piece argues a 4 to 5 percent statutory rate would ruin Oregon’s economy. It claims industrial collapse would occur as no entity, including the U S government, could borrow at such rates. Individual borrowers would be unable to obtain money, leading to industrial death for the state.

A convention is called in Portland on October 4 and 5 1920 with representatives from Northwest in Congress and the National Rivers and Harbors Congress. Delegates from rail and shipping lines, port bodies, commercial groups, wholesalers, and other business interests will attend to develop plans to present to Congress and shape policy for Northwest development.
Washington reports August 1 crop forecasts across major goods including winter wheat 533 million bushels spring wheat 262 million corn 3.003 billion oats 1.402 billion and total wheat 795 million. Crop conditions show spring wheat 73.4 percent of normal and oats 86.7 percent. oats remaining on farms 56.42 million bushels versus 93.05 million a year prior.
Poultry specialists cull 79 weak layers from 992 hens on Ralph Oglesby’s Banks Oregon farm reducing weekly yield by 56 eggs.
