The Valley Queen owned by George Skinner of Independence begins daily river service between Newberg and Portland except Sundays. The 6:30 am departure reaches Portland after three hours, returning by six pm with a one dollar round trip fare. Skinner promises flexible service and local errands for passengers, aiming for permanent operation with patronage.
Portland tailors present coats made by first class workers at no extra cost for rent or fires, with up to date styles. They advertise black dress worsteds English serges and woolen goods for suits and ladies dress worsteds, sold by the yard or made to measure. Also featuring low priced carsimere and the Davis sewing machine agency.

A scientific party from Newberg Oregon arrives to collect marine fauna and establish a laboratory at Mattys building with plans for further specimens.

Primary county and state papers will be held in the courthouse August 9 10 11 12 with examinations starting 1 PM Wednesday August 9. State papers cover penmanship history spelling algebra reading written arithmetic theory of teaching grammar bookkeeping physics physiology geography mental arithmetic composition physical geography botany plane geometry general history English literature psychology. County papers list similar subjects by day. Applicants for primary certificates will also be examined on the art of questioning and methods of teaching on Wednesday August 9.
