A 17 year old Oregon City girl, Elsie Telford, won a hometown debate against Single Tax proponents. Her arguments warned that land taxes under Single Tax would burden homeowners, threaten farms, and transfer ownership to the government, with the tenant at risk if crops fail.
Prof Harvey Wright and Miss Lenn Spangle wed at 2 p m on Wednesday at the Terrell residence with Rev Charles O Whitely officiating. Guests include Ray and Charles Spangle and many local friends. the couple plan further study at Earlham College Indiana.
Dr. A B Shelton spoke at Friends church sharing seven and a half years as a missionary in Tibet high in Central Asia. He and his family endured isolation to teach natives a better way of living while now raising funds for broader outreach. Rev George C Ritchey arranged the talk in Newberg.
The Southern Pacific Pacific Railway and Navigation Company and Corvallis and Eastern Railway announce free transport for exhibits from Oregon pupils to the Oregon State Fair. Exhibits must be from regularly enrolled pupils and shipped under school authority with the notation Shipment contains exhibits of regularly enrolled pupils for exhibition not for sale. The Oregon Electric extends a similar offer.
A Good Roads meeting at Mountain Top school house attracted many attendees. Chairman W R Everest urged township organization to equalize road funding, noting District No 7 paid $5 per day while District No 6 paid $4. I N Campbell praised hill road improvements and farmers’ benefits under organization. George Winger supported elected road supervisors with responsive authority. Pacific College alumni enjoyed a Moonlight on the Willamette trip aboard the Leon with a picnic supper at the island and a twenty mile river ride. Portland report shows 8 million dollars spent in the latest fiscal year on North Bank Road Oregon Electric extensions and related lines from Salem to Albany and Eugene. Albany station cost over 15 thousand, Eugene about 20 thousand, with Newberg street improvements assessed to abutting property and council to hear protests August 5.
Berg Yamhill County Oregon proposes to improve Main street from First Street south to a line 160 feet south of Fourth Street. The project includes grading concrete curbs drainage and paving with five inch gravel bitulithic pavement. The work will be done to match the established grade.
The City Council of Newberg Yamhill County Oregon proposes to grade Washington street from Second to Hancock with concrete curbs drainage and five inch gravel bitulithic pavement. Plans filed July 15 1912 set the estimated cost at 3750 and assessments will be placed on abutting property as provided by city charter and Oregon law. The meeting time is o clock p m at Recorder W W Nelson to consider.
