The Newberg Farmers Club held a lively session at the cannery auditorium and discussed broccoli growing in the region. Members weighing timing for spring versus next year, acre needs, Oregon Growers Association support, and plans to form a committee to contact farmers.
Mrs Archie Fleming of Fernwood traveled to Portland on Wednesday to visit Seattle friends.
The children's class in folk dancing led by Miss Frances Rocchi will demonstrate folk dances and singing games at Legion Hall on Friday evening May 6 at 8 15. Admission is 25 cents and all are invited.
A Newberg Farmers club committee reported twenty eight and one quarter acres of broccoli signed by local growers after a meeting with Prof Kilham. G H Brown of the Oregon Growers Cooperative Association arranged seventy six ounces of seed to be reserved for local use and signups continue from half an acre upward.
The Presbyterian auditorium hosted a third recital by Miss Britt with many high school pupils debuting with credit. Duets by Mrs. Georgia Babcock and Evah Hadley impressed, while C. A. Morris sang Lost Chord with fine accompaniment. A Tancredi piano trio closed the program with Euphemia Boyes Emma Woodworth and Miss Britt.
Dr Gilbert the district superintendent of the Salem district of the M B church was in Newberg Thursday.
A large audience at the cannery auditorium endorsed naming the new berry booster group The Berrians. Prof Kilham and Mr Dimond spoke for organization, citing Portland area markets and festival advertising as benefits. The vote was unanimous with a planning committee named to draft plans.
Sewell Newhouse son of C E Newhouse Springbrook will graduate this spring from Oregon Agricultural College with a civil engineering degree, adding to a bachelor of science from Pacific College. He has been active in the American Association of Engineers, Civil Engineering society, and the Delta Kappa fraternity. He runs cross country, seeks track, summers in civil engineering work, and served 14 months in the army earning a second lieutenants commission.
L P Swan longtime Champoeg flour mill owner died at his home April 25. Born July 8 1845 in Sweden he leaves a widow two sons Gus A Swan Lawrence E Swan three daughters Anna Amanda Eva and siblings in Champoeg and Sweden. Funeral from the Cham poeg home April 27 Rev T Brouillette officiated burial in family plot near Champoeg.
Walter Newman and Miss Florence McGuire wed at Rev. Joseph Hoberg’s home in McMinnville last Saturday. Miss McGuire, daughter of Mrs. Nancy McGuire of McGuire’s Island in the Columbia River, has lived with her uncle James McGuire nearby for ten years and attended the local high school. Brownie Newman, son of the Newmans who run a dairy ranch, served in the recent war and now drives truck for S. P. Timberlake.
Mrs Harriett Amelia Bisconer died at her daughter’s Fernwood home at 11 o clock Wednesday night after a brief illness. Born in New York state in 1829 she was 92. She had lived with the Piersons for 18 months after residing near Dundee for 12 years. Her husband died at the Dundee home about nine years ago. Funeral from Hollingsworth chapel at 10 a m Friday with Rev Tabor of Dundee officiating. Interment in Yamhill cemetery.
The Kensington club gathered at Mrs. C. H. Nichols home on the Portland road for a Wednesday afternoon meeting. Spring was the prevailing theme in decorations, place cards shaped as umbrellas, and roll call responses. Mrs. Frank Zumwalt sang a solo as Victrola music played, with refreshments of salad ice cream and cake followed by attendance of Mrs. C. E. Gibson and members including Mesdames Kienle Thurston Kentner Ginn Gould Baird Zumwalt Moore Madsen Chamberlain Dart Nottage Nich.
The 42 Eugene yard workers return to a six day week after two months on four days. Wages average $5 daily, boosting Eugene payroll by over $200 weekly as the restoration covers all yards and roundhouses in the state.

The game, played in showery cold conditions, was called after the seventh inning. Chi Sung Pil pitched for the locals with eleven strikeouts and five hits allowed, while Shee ley pitched for P. U. fanning ten. George Larkin umpired the affair.

Harry White of Salem and J H Brown of Newberg visited the News-Times office to report on the Oregon Growers Cooperative association. White says prunes will be completely cleaned up and sold before next harvest. The group claims to have sold more prunes than all others combined this year, despite criticism and competition. Since organizing a year ago it has built nine plants and four large dryers, with about 380000 dollars in buildings and half a million tied up in assets, driven by efficient management amid tough markets.
Card of Thanks expresses gratitude for kindness shown at the funeral of a beloved brother and notes Judge E. V. Littlefield and Miss Lena Hornibrook. Hornibrook is expected home from Portland hospital later this week after a mastoid operation, with friends glad she is on the road to recovery.
Oliver H Kilham argues Newberg should protect existing shade trees rather than remove them to save sidewalk repair costs. He praises trees as essential to a city’s beauty and economy, urging municipal action to preserve trees and oppose cutting them for short term savings.
Green B. Dyer celebrated his 80th birthday with a dinner at the home of his old schoolmate William Sargent. Guests included Mrs. Redmond and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Scott Riggs, and R. F. Dyer, plus neighbors. The gathering featured a sumptuous dinner and well wishes for many happy returns.
Coyle sold his butcher shop on east First Street to Cray Broa and took over a 100 acre ranch four miles from town on the main road to St Paul. The deal included building and real estate as well as equipment and business. The shop is closed but new owners plan to lease to tenants who will reopen soon. Coyle reports securing an excellent ranch with about two thirds cultivated.
