The Yamhill county closing oratorical contest gathered seven of nine high schools at McMinnville College on Saturday evening April 15. Contestants included Sylvia Hitt Yamhill Frank Harner Carlton Vern Fudge McMinnville Miss Gladys Hart Dayton Miss Pearl Sincox Amity Miss Blanche Vedder Dundee and Miss Coldie Ever est Newberg. Miss Hart placed third Sincox second and Vern Pudge won the gold medal donated by Dr Toney McMinnville who backs public speaking as a key educational skill.

The Del Winters Tragedy at Sand Lake
The Cloverdale Courier reports the accidental shooting of Del Winters at Sand Lake in Tillamook county during a bear hunt. Winters grabbed a falling gun causing the hammer to discharge into his abdomen. his eleven year old son and Fred Affolter were present and attempted to seek help. Affolter urged prompt medical aid, but Winters believed he would die before a doctor could arrive.

Tragic Train Alley Accident Leaves Family in Mourning
The injured man Affolter started but wandered in the woods and was not found until late afternoon. His son stayed with his dying father as Mr Winters, after a failed attempt to reach home, collapsed fifty yards away. Winters died about an hour and a half later. The funeral was held at Oretown church, and the deceased left a wife and four children.
