City Council Approves Bonds for Sewer System and Library Board
The adjourned city council meeting last Thursday approved an $80,000 bond issue for sewer construction and a $2,000 appropriation to G. P. Skelton for spring use. They appointed a library board and discussed Sunday business closures and street improvements including First, River, Second and Center streets.

Petrified wood and ancient pestle found in Oakdale field
J S Macomber of Oak recovered a two pound one ounce petrified wood piece showing preserved wood grain and growth lines after plowing new ground. Nearby an eight inch ancient Indian pestle, worn by daily use, was unearthed on land once part of the Harris donation and long owned by Newman d Salinas. Arrow heads are frequently found nearby. Local observer Polk Co Observer notes the site as a former Indian area with many discoveries.

Newberg Citizen Opposes Library Site Choice
In a public letter a Newberg resident argues against placing the proposed public library at the current site behind Miller’s store, calling it unsightly and advocating for a more suitable location. He promotes community beautification efforts, notes prior donations and public improvements, and offers to fund a tenth of a future site price elsewhere to support a dignified library.
Oregon denominational colleges meet in Newberg discuss school law
The meeting of Oregon denominational colleges including Pacific University Willamette Albany Dallas McMinnville and Pacific was held in Newberg. President Reagan presided at the banquet and business session where Ho man of Willamette was named president and Franklin of Albany secretary. State Superintendent Alderman spoke on the new school law and college relations to public and high schools. A contest selected Riley of McMinnville for the State Board of Standardization. The group toured the new college building and next meeting time will be set by the executive committee.

Knights of Pythias Lodge Founded in Newberg
Last Friday night Newberg established a Knights of Pythias lodge with Grand lodge officers and 50 visiting delegates. Twenty-two new members were admitted by transfect card as the Newberg band played, with representation from Salem, McMinnville, Portland, Eugene, North Yamhill, Gaston and Rainier. The I C O F hall will host weekly meetings, with visitors welcome.

Benson Dies and Olcott Appointed Secretary of State
Frank W. Benson former Governor of Oregon and Secretary of State died in Redlands California last week. Governor West named Ben W. Olcott to fill the vacancy and political maneuvering to strengthen their holds in 1912 and 1914 is discussed as Olcott takes office. Four officials may be discharged as part of the reshuffle with Olcott expected to build a political machine for future campaigns.
