Dr Green condemns war rhetoric and urges true democracy as guiding principle. He warns against militarism and fear, calls for unity, mutual forbearance, and a world republic of humanity led by the United States. Officers elected for the league and a season schedule for W A A C is announced.
A meeting was held at the W. 4 A C club rooms on Aprila to discuss baseball league organization and future schedules. Participants outlined proposed club roles and acting officers for the season.
In Jersey Isle England born man died April 8 1915 at age 67 1 18. He moved to America with his parents as a youth settling in Tennessee. A stone cutter and brick mason he helped rebuild Chicago after the 1871 fire then worked in Portland on notable structures including the Oregonian and Dekum buildings. He had seven years with George W. Smith at his death. Survived by brothers R M Jackett Covington TN Wim Jackett Rialto TN and sister Mrs S Hurt Marianna AR. Funeral by Rev George C Ritchey at 2 pm Saturday from W W Hollingsworth Son parlors.
Alabama and Washington adopt Texas style cottages for rural school teachers to replace the old round plan. Counties build multiple houses near schools with land and cooperative living, hiring domestic help. Texas reports over 100 such cottages.
Dr. S. F. Capen notes U S Bureau standards push Oregon colleges toward uniform admissions. Pacific College lags by endowment, needing about $100,000 more to meet the $200,000 target before standardization, while planning library and lab upgrades.
Newberg friends mourn the death of Mrs J W Trew who died April 7 in a Hoquiam hospital after a yearlong illness. Surrounded by family she passed peacefully. Funeral held April 10 at Hoquiam M B church conducted by Rev C Hamilton of Portland with assistance from Rev Sutton. Flowers expressed community sorrow.
The document records Sweaney Turner of Randolph County Missouri drafting a last will and testament dated June 3 1840. It details bequests of enslaved people cattle horses and furniture to his children and specifies remainder lands and enslaved property go to his wife Susan P Turner for life with proceeds used to support and educate the children. After the wifes death the estate is to be divided among the children with one moiety to be sold and the other kept by the heirs. The will names witnesses Thos P Coates and Andrew Evans and is signed and interlined before signing.
At Mrs. Jennie Best home on North Meridian Street a Tuesday night W C T U debate asked whether heredity has more influence than environment. Mrs G O Bassett and Mrs David Johnson spoke for the affirmative while Miss Emma and Rae Langworthy argued the negative. Judges Mary E Bankson Emily Gardner and Rev Charles C Whitely favored the negative. A social hour and refreshments followed. about thirty people attended.
Plans call for a new Portland Post Office building costing one million dollars to start within 60 days. The architect promises completion in fourteen months. The structure will be a large modern office building of the type used in the United States.
A debate at Wood-Mar Hall features Albany College versus Pacific College inside Wood-Mar Hall this Friday night. Ellis Pickett and Arthur Benson of the senior class will argue for and against an increase in the United States Navy.
Saturday afternoon a sizable W R C turnout heard an address by Comrade Lee at the hall. The program opened with army songs and a prayer by Rev. Gould, followed by remarks. Col Pike and Comrade Lee, apart from Britt, recalled the Lee surrender, while Mrs J L Marshall received a pleasant visit and aid during illness.
Members gathered at the tabernacle for the eighth annual meeting on Friday April 9 with baskets and glad hearts. Three roll calls yielded 170 responses and reports from all departments were excellent. The church begins the ninth year with the same pastor and bright prospects.
