A poem laments springtime joy as the season signals renewal yet mocks political candidates. The speaker prefers bees and blossoms over speeches, expressing weariness with patriots and election promises that threaten to crowd out simple pleasures.
School notes announce spelling and arithmetic contests at McMinnville High on Saturday April 12 at 10 30 with winners advancing from each grade. Also inter county field meet set for May 24 at McMinnville College grounds and training urged.
The Star theatre presents a Biograph Photoplay with Mary Pickford in a leading life portrayal and a comedy drama featuring Arthur Johnson as a country school teacher. Vitagraph comedies The Professor and the Lady and Aquatic Elephants entertain, while The Non commissioned Officer is praised for accurate military details. Music by Alice Arney and a Seely sisters song highlight a fine program for Friday and Saturday.
The Salter Trio will give a concert April 15 at Wood-Mar Hall under the College Student Body. Praised by H W Stone and Drury of Philomath College, the program includes violin and vocal solos, readings, duets, trios, sketches and musical comedies. Admission 50 cents. reserved seats at Hudson's Drug Store after Friday morning.
A public meeting at the Sprin schoolhouse discussed reorganizing the cannery. Carl Nelson chaired a report proposing a new company with capital stock near 5,000 to take over the old plant. Local bankers and merchants pledged support, a subscription paper yielded close to five thousand dollars, as women served lunch to close the evening.
Local residents report returns and moves among families with trips to Scholls and Tillamook. Community events include Sunday school classes, visits from Miss Grace Hopkins, and a growing West Chehalem attendance in a Palestine themed contest. The ladies aid plans fundraisers and a kitchen addition with a musical and box social on April 18. Church services continue Sundays with Sunday school at 10 and worship at 11 led by Mr Crocker.
On April 5 a quiet wedding was held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. William en in Astoria uniting Ruby, youngest daughter of the hosts, to Donald L. Chase of Newberg. Rev Crumley officiated. olive green messaline gown, bride roses, sister Agnes Chan dos L. Chase as attendant, best man Chan dos L. Chase. The groom, eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. H. Chase, has lived in Astoria two years. The bride is praised for fine character and the couple received many useful gifts from friends.
The McMinnville College team Tipton and Taylor defeated Pacific College with Arthur George and Ellis Pickett. Olin C Hadley and Prof Hawkins attended. May Day plans underway with parade queen election and campus events. Baseball vs Chemawa Indians and a bonfire planned. State Prohibition Oratorical Contest at Eugene Friday features Lisle Hubbard representing Pacific College.
Mrs Roe Robison spent the weekend in Newberg. Neighbors hosted sausage roast and birthday apron shower. Upper grade party, hard times dancing in Groth hall drew a large crowd with costumes. Directors of Dundee Co operative Fruit Growers met midweek. Ruth Bennett visiting Portland. Michel Miller and spouse plan Europe trip via Paris Switzerland Germany.
Mr and Mrs Wren Reynolds will take charge of the Miller home and orchards in the absence of their aunt and uncle. Bland Herring installs a pneumatic water pressure system in his Dundee home powered by an electric motor to supply spring water.
Prof Herbert York spoke at the school house on his Alaskan expedition during March and Chehalem Center hopes for another visit. Miss Florence McGuire won the gold medal at a Demorest Medal Contest in Lafayette. C C Sunday School progress with Supt F L Strait. Delegates named for the Sunday School convention in Oregon City. The C C Literary Club meets next Friday with K L Tangen to discuss farmer cooperation. A social evening at Rev W H Wilson's home followed heavy rain. Mrs W W Baker and family visited K L Tangen's home. Patron meeting discussed district book purchases and whether to extend half day sessions and sewing.
