President Wilson told Union veterans that the United States was founded to serve mankind and uphold human rights and that some wars are noble. An uproar from veterans interrupted his remarks as some left in protest while the crowd debated the merits of the speaker’s vision.

About 1,800 University of Pennsylvania undergraduates signed a petition from the Wharton School and college students urging Provost Smith and the trustees to recall Dr. Nearing. Posters proclaimed Nearing Day and urged submission of the petition to protect the university’s good name.
Paris dispatch reports the Italian battleship Benedetto Brin suffered a fire and explosion. Eight officers and 75 marines saved. Rear Admiral Ernesto Rubin de Cervin reported dead. The pre dreadnought carried 720 men, armed with four 12 inch guns and other heavy guns, speed about 20 knots.
In Springdale Connecticut on September 28 Thomas Roberts forgot to put the cat out. The cat’s cries woke the family this morning and the animal escaped through a window as the house burned.
British and French forces renewed pressure on Loos with heavy fighting and gains noted along the second line. Reports indicate French troops capturing ground as the Allied offensive draws German reserves from the eastern front while Russia sees tactical successes along much of the front. Officials highlight the West's impact on German manpower and strategy in both Russia and Serbia contexts.
British Foreign Secretary Sir Edward Grey told the House of Commons that the Entente will not aid Bulgaria if it sides with Germany and warned swift action if Bulgaria mobilizes against British allies.
