A bomb addressed to Jacob Schiff was found by David Thompson, a Negro boy, near a mailbox in Philadelphia on September 24. The package, 10 by 4 by 1 inches, contained a matchbox with gunpowder and bullets, a New Year card, and a plan to ignite the matches and explode the powder. Inspector Cortellon is investigating.
In the Bronx at a zoo garden Benga the pngmy attacked a keeper with a knife after a tense standoff. Visitors teased him as keepers sprayed him with water and forced him to re dress before he dashed back to his cage and drew a knife again before being subdued.
A Lucknow dispatch reports a boat carrying nearly 200 people capsized in midstream on the Indus where the northwest frontier province meets Attock district. Only about thirty were saved. the passengers, likely traders from the province, were en route to the interior.
The Anti Tuberculosis League has appealed to John D Rockefeller for support to build a large sanatorium on the lake shore for consumptive children. Friends say he has not yet signified a reply, but the project has favorable reception and awaits his decision.
Buffalo Sept 23 Lewis Nixon of New York City former Tammany leader was chosen temporary chairman of the Democratic State Convention. The decision followed a tense meeting at the Iroquois Hotel as factions battled over delegates and Hearst supporters. The committee avoided a full test vote by deferring contests to the credentials committee, and Nixon’s selection favored Murphy allies despite claims of fairness.
A luxurious fast train with observation car leaves New York at 2 4 p m via New York Central Lines, America’s Greatest Railroad. Time table lists other fast trains for Cincinnati Indianapolis and St Louis.
