Leon F. Czolgosz alias Fred Nieman was convicted of murder in the first degree for shooting President William McKinley on September 6. The trial lasted a little over eight hours over two days, with experts deeming him sane. Sentencing set for Thursday at 2 p.m. amid large City Hall crowds.
The crowd grew larger while police maintained strict vigilance in the courtroom. Witnesses included Samuel J. Fields and Dr. Mann who discussed the President’s wounds, prognosis, and possible causes of the gangrenous condition, with experts noting germs and pancreatic juice as factors and affirming the pancreas likely escaped direct injury.
The Rev Dr George T Purves pastor of Fifth Avenue Presbyterian and moderator of the New York Presbytery died suddenly at his home on West Fifty-eighth Street after a brief illness. He came to the church from Princeton in 1900 and had nine years' prior service at Princeton University. He leaves a widow and seven children.

He trained at University of Pennsylvania and Princeton Theological Seminary, preached in multiple churches, and taught NT literature at Princeton Theological Seminary from 1892. He received honorary degrees from Washington and Jefferson College, University of Pennsylvania, and Lafayette College.
Washington reports from the Colombian legation confirm the defeat of revolutionary General Marin in Tolima. He escaped capture while his 3,000-strong force collapsed. Santander remains quiet, but Venezuelans fear Colombian invasion as officials say no such action is planned. The rebellion has cost Colombia up to 200 million pounds and about 40,000 lives, mostly Colombians, with around 400 Venezuelan auxiliaries.
Senator Bacon of Georgia pledged freedom for the Philippines after the war at a Camarines Province dinner. Tennessee Representative Gaines and Pennsylvania Representative Green echoed the sentiment. Troops from the 6th Cavalry and two artillery batteries hunted insurgents in Laguna Province, with small-band activity and a shelling of Carmona’s presidente house in Binang. Malvar urged villagers to give one tenth of the rice crop or face force.
The Duke and Duchess of Cornwall and York departed Ottawa at 12 30 on a special train bound for Winnipeg to continue their western tour. They were escorted by a dragoons detachment and met by a guard of honor at Government House. Crowds thronged the streets and station as the royal party passed. Major Augustus Whitlock Conover of the Seventh Regiment died yesterday at Bay Shore Long Island. He served over thirty years rising from private in 1870 to captain of company A in 1882 and major in 1895, succeeding Major Kipp. He was fifty four and a son of Daniel D. and Catherine E. Conover.
During military maneuvers near Valkenburg an automobile wreck fractured the skull of Captain Baron Van Asbeck of the Dutch Army. Colonel Von Siegler the German military attaché and the Belgian attaché were fatally injured, with Russian and Norwegian attachés also hurt. Ad notices about yacht races and ticket sales follow.
The Shamrock and Columbia were measured for the New York Yacht Club regatta as time allowances were set. Shamrock appears to have a smaller than expected 43 second advantage over Columbia for a 30 mile race. Spectators note mast rigging differences while praising Columbia’s proven performance and Lipton’s crew showing.
The New York Yacht Club issued race conditions for the America's Cup commencing tomorrow. The series will be best of five with courses from Sandy Hook Lightship including windward and leeward, an equilateral triangle, and variations. Starts, compass bearings, and marks will be announced. if a Sandy Hook start is not possible, the plan continues on the fourth page.
Washington Sept 24 President Roosevelt has authorized no one to define his public positions since taking office He reiterates the McKinley policy and has spoken to no one about detailed intentions Reports of his plan to push reciprocity in his December message are unfounded He has told General Wood he favors limited reciprocity with Cuba but has not discussed further actions.

Secretary Gage discussed the Treasury and financial matters at length as preparations for upcoming duties and a rest ordered by his physician followed the Buffalo tragedy. A. S. Solomons recalled a New York incident where Hebrew policemen surrounded a foreign agitator to keep a demonstration orderly, highlighting Roosevelt’s earlier police leadership. The President also met Senators Burton Harris and Taliaferro, Representative Sparkman, and navy officers Lamberton and Sharp, with Mrs Roosevelt and the children to join tomorrow afternoon, restoring the White House to a home for the children after five years.
Fall River notices announce a 5 percent wage increase for about three thousand mill workers effective October 1, signed by M. C. D. Borden. The move follows prior resistance to wage rises and sparks mixed reaction among mill owners and workers. A textile council meeting is called to push similar gains across mills, backed by a second 5 percent increase at Bourne Mills.
Henry Wood of Norwich shot his former housekeeper Mrs Elizabeth Greenleaf at Plymouth then killed himself. Greenleaf had cared for Wood for about ten years but left three weeks earlier to live with her brother in Plymouth. Greenleaf not expected to survive. An all round remedy for Lung and Throat ails Jaynes Expectorant.
Seth Low said he had not yet received official notification of nomination by the Republican and Citizens Union conventions. He pledged to accept once informed and noted he appointed John J. Clark as his campaign secretary, a former Citizens Union secretary.
The Republican convention denounces Tammany Hall as a corrupt, plunderous faction and promises a non party, honest administration. It pledges police reform, reduced taxes, docked public spending, stronger factory and labor protections, and expanded public schools while urging removal of Tammany influence and broader personal liberty within public decency.

Lieutenant-Governor Woodruff chosen as permanent chairman. platform urged non partisanship in municipal affairs and efficient administration. Scenery and music advertised aboard the Hudson River Day Line royal journey.
At Cooper Union the Citizens Union Convention adopted its conference committee report and nominated Seth Low for Mayor Edward Grant for Controller and Charles Fornes for President of the Board of Aldermen. Coler supporters pressed Ezra Coler but his name was not presented. The roll call showed 1,163 of 1,249 delegates voting.
