John S. Lyle, age ninety one and reputed to have four million dollars, married Julia G. Hannon, sixty one years his junior, in Yonkers after a speedy licensure. They return to Tenafly New Jersey to live at the Lyle home where she had cared for his sister‑in‑law and later joined his household.
In Pelham Georgia two prominent men Charles Tate and John Marchant died in a pistol duel on a public road. Both men shot each other after stopping their buggies. Tate had married the widow of Frank Marchant, brother of the man he killed. The feud dated from an old grudge and began when Marchant called Tate to his buggy.
Thomas E. Watson directs Governor-elect Hoke Smith to resign, vowing to reveal political skeletons and ruin his public life if he stays. He hints at private letters and past scandals including a gloves case and a letter Brown handed Smith. Watson urges retirement for the country’s sake and family.

Probationary officer Christian Klei entered a 20 by 5 by 6 foot enamel tank flooded with turpentine fumes to rescue painter George H. Lott who had collapsed inside. After more than ten minutes of perilous effort Klei and caretaker Charles Steingut freed Lott and carried him outside where he regained consciousness. Lott was admitted to Presbyterian Hospital for several days of observation.
Secretary Richard A Ballinger defended his record at a Denver dinner, stating he will reveal the sources of moral uplift used by critics after leaving office. He praised Interior Department efficiency, pledged to run the department under the Constitution, and asserted his actions blocked overzealous efforts to turn public land into a national preserve.
A tin trunk containing two thousand dollars in bills was stolen from the Cumberland County Fair Grounds ticket office in Gorham Maine. Though the fair treasurer and three clerks were inside and an officer guarded outside, police have no clues. The money was proceeds from the fair's first day. An advertisement promotes a weekend steamboat outing to West Point.
Paris reports French indignation over a $30,000,000 Turkish loan with an English group led by Sir Ernest Cassel. French Foreign Office calls Turkey's attitude nearly blackmail.
E D Gleason of Philadelphia, who claimed to convert base metals to silver, is jailed in Lackawanna County on forgery and false pretence charges related to Dr F W Lange. A financier, A O Granger, advanced efforts to help Gleason after a prior arrest, witnessing experiments before experts deemed them unconvincing. Lange says Gleason obtained $25 000 via a forged note, and Granger withdrew support after the latest trial.
Neighbors watched as Central Office detectives nabbed an alleged burglar at 522 West 174th Street. Miss Mabel Quinn confronted the thief in her dining room, he fled via the fire escape, but Detective Davis halted him near a dumbwaiter shaft. Items identified as Quinn’s valuables, two watches and a locket were recovered.
Mrs. F. F. Wales wife of the Carnegie Steel Homestead mill superintendent steered her speeding car toward the curb to spare a mill worker who stumbled into its path. She was badly injured along with four others Miss Caroline Sharpe and Miss Rose Walsh plus Caroline Miller and H. C. Huff. The car was destroyed.
Winslow Brewster Standish longtime curator of the Old Curiosity Shop in Plymouth Massachusetts died after a three month illness. He bore names of three Pilgrim leaders and was the only surviving seventh generation descendant of Captain Miles Standish. Born March 7 1834 he served in the Civil War and met President Lincoln in hospital. He married Sylvia Mobury in 1781. she survives him and the couple had no children.
Secret Service agents arrested Andrew Krol and John Porzik in Passaic New Jersey as members of a counterfeiting gang. The two men were taken to New Hampshire later this afternoon for custody.
Fort Wayne reports a head on collision of two Fort Wayne and Bluffton interurban cars near Kingsland leaving forty two dead and seven seriously injured. The southbound limited and northbound local collided on a sharp curve causing extensive deaths and injuries. Rescue efforts and medical aid followed as Bluffton and Fort Wayne crews responded.
