Memoir of a Scottish Doctor Who Served in China

A narrative of a Scots Irish medical student born 1833 whose Crimean and India service led to China. He joined the Lanarkshire regiment, witnessed brutal justice in Canton, then resigned to work for Li Hung Chang. A Spirit in Prison by Robert Hichens reviewed

The review finds A Spirit in Prison indecisive and verbose with Hermione Delarey and her daughter at its center. It contrasts with The Garden of Allah noting dull handling of Ruffo and Delarey’s daughter and questions Hichens’s restraint and vitality in handling the melodrama. Hilary on Her Own and Amédee's Son receive lighter, favorable mentions.
