Reports detail Cuban insurgents advancing toward Havana while Liberals press for stronger postwar footing. US mediators including Taft and Bacon plan to seek armistice terms after clashes at Las Milpas and Guanajay, with both sides claiming gains and losses.
Hong Kong reports a sudden two hour typhoon wrecking many native vessels and causing heavy loss of life. Numerous ships, ferries, and piers were driven ashore or demolished. Moes and twenty French sailors killed. Manila wires note hundreds dead and over 1 million dollars in damage.
Weekend excursions offered by Pennsylvania Railroad every Saturday with round trip fares from Gage to Atlantic City. Tickets priced at $9 and $12 with advance purchase advised through local agents.
Lawyer John Henry Hammond of Wall Street and East 9th Street was arrested after a scuffle at the 280 East Broadway polling place amid fights over election procedures. He was held at Madison Street Station until bail posted by ex judge Cohen and William Leary. Hammond says he was assaulted and disputes the deputy sheriff’s arrest of him.
Charles M. Floyd of Manchester won the New Hampshire Republican gubernatorial nomination after nine ballots at Concord. Winston Churchill of Cornish led early but finished second as Churchill backed reforms included in the platform. The platform endorses Roosevelt and calls for primary reforms and railroad regulation.
Fire swept the Southern Cotton Oil Company plant on 11th street Jersey City wrecking machinery and oil stores. The blaze spread to nearby buildings including Jersey City Milling Company causing additional damage. Patrolman Kelly helped rescue horses and firefighters were revived after smoke exposure. Origin of the fire remains unknown and nearby plants suffered minor damage.
Berlin reports Hamburg newspaper dispatch says the Hamburg American Line steamer Meteor was forced to leave Portsmouth harbor during a storm. Officials at Plymouth dockyard deny being ordered to depart noting the vessel left on its own accord after a brief stay.
Captain Southerland, commanding naval forces, reports acute conditions in Santo Domingo with a possible revolution. 400 troops are gathered at Monte Cristi, threatening unprotected areas as communications between Puerto Plata and Monte Cristi fail. He urges no more naval movement from Santo Domingo under now conditions.
Two Rock Island cars plunged into the Cimarron River at Dover Oklahoma as a bridge failed. One known death is Hank Littlefield of the Forepaugh Sells circus. a three year old child and nine others injured. A second wreck near Carleton on the South Canadian River leaves the engineer and fireman dead and a brakeman missing.
San Francisco reports Hibernia Bank officials say the London and Lancashire Fire Insurance Co will pay policyholders 95 cents on the dollar for San Francisco fire losses. The bank has been asked to remove the company from its list of nonperforming insurers, a proposal directors have not yet accepted.
Herbert Parsons defeats Quigg-Odell faction to lead Republican county committee with Roosevelt and Higgins backing. Charles Murphy holds Democratic chair as Woodruff and McCarren win in Kings County. Bermel and Burden win Queens Democratic contests. Muller defeats McCormack in Richmond. Hammond arrested after polling place quarrel in West Broadway.
Charles F. Murphy retains control of Tammany after primary fights. He aims to push the unit rule in Buffalo and yield the delegation to Hearst. McClellan’s side loses three districts but claims no delegation control. Donohue loses 17th to Williams with O Brien backing. Nagle defeats Cowan in 30th amid disorder, while Hahn loses in 19th to McClellan’s candidate. Cowan vows court action, calling the race a riot.
Albany Sept 18 Governor Higgins and a group of friends heard the Republican primary results tonight at the executive mansion. He praised the showing in New York Kings and Erie counties and telegraphed congratulations to Herbert Parsons Timothy L Woodruff and Clark H Timmerman of those counties.
In Buffalo on September 18, Warren steps down as State Committeeman, signaling Higgins forces gain. Anti Warren factions win the 1st 2nd and 3rd Assembly districts while Democrat contests focus on personalities and Hearst support remains strong among county Democrats. The Democratic delegation backs Hearst with limited anti Hearst sentiment shaping the State Convention prospects.
Port Said records a fresh mutiny aboard the Turkish troopship Assar-i-Tewalk today, with authorities reticent on details. Reports say one Longman was wounded in yesterday’s disturbance as the mutiny was again quashed. Also notes a Pennsylvania Railroad special train leaving New York at 6:46 am and returning from Atlantic City at 10 pm, last of the session.
Herbert Parsons supporters swept yesterday's primaries, securing the county committee presidency and a strong showing across districts. Parsons claimed loyalty to Roosevelt’s leadership and signaled shifting power as Odell and Higgins factions argued over state and county control.
