In Durham on September 13 Pellagra spread rapidly with nine deaths in the region. Two new cases were found, and one of the eleven initially afflicted is expected to die within a week. Runaway 4 at Mardi Gras Tragedy Strikes Mounted Patrol
During the Mardi Gras parade near Coney Island Red the horse of Parkville station mounted patrolman Stevenson rose on his hind legs and was struck by a car. The horse fell and rolled into the crowd as Sergeants Taylor Rigney and Thompson pursued. Thompson was badly injured when jerked from his saddle while catching the horse. Both Stevenson and Thompson were taken to Coney Island Hospital. Stevenson suffered a broken ankle and minor injuries while Thompson had a fractured collarbone, brain concussion and two broken ribs and is not expected to live.

José Melendez, after three days wandering in the desert near Barn well, accidentally shot laborer L Rodriguez in a tent mortally wounding him. Melendez, dehydrated and desperate, sought water, then fired the revolver. City to Run Trolley Service Across Queensboro Bridge
Mayor McClellan announced that the city will operate a trolley line across the Queensboro Bridge starting Saturday. Wall Collapse Kills One and Injures Dozens in Pittsburg

Moose Attack Ends in Hunter's Knife Kill at Colby Lake
Daniel Murchinson of Aurora Minnesota fought a bull moose while fishing on Colby Lake. He killed the animal with a sheath knife after the moose knocked him, breaking his left arm and wounding his shoulder. Death by own action shocks financial world banker Castles
John W. Castles president of Union Trust Company was found dead in a Grand Union Hotel room. A nervous breakdown and recent illness were cited as likely causes. He lived at 540 Park Avenue with a Morristown home and left a wife Elizabeth and two children. The case prompted no inquest, with coroner noting illness as the probable motive.
