Fire in Taunton Massachusetts on September 10 endangered the Taunton Theatre and Odd Fellows Hall as Grote Manufacturing Company suffered major damage. In Pittsburg on September 10 Thomas L. Lewis head of the United Mine Workers left the district convention amid uproar over explosives rules. The march toward a coal mining vow and brand specification stalled with eight thousand miners on strike and a threatened general suspension. Francis Feehan accused Lewis of bluffing as no progress was made on the explosives issue. An advertisement for Hudson-Fulton Preservation Service Bend for one appears at the end.
The Tennessee flagship leads eight cruisers from San Francisco to Honolulu in four days and seventeen hours. The Colorado and West Virginia suffered machinery failures, with two men dead from a steam pipe blast on the Colorado. Fleet will test four hours of speed next week at Maui Island under Rear Admiral Sebree.
Brescia reports a riot at the aerodrome when no flights occurred due to strong winds. Cavalry and carabineers forced back the eager crowd while the committee reassured attendees by making today’s tickets valid for tomorrow. Visitors Glenn Curtiss hosted included Puccini and Gabriele d Annunzio.

A published report claimed the Pennsylvania Railroad refused to sell its controlling stake in Cambria Steel. After a brief bout of bargaining he accepted 2 dollars for a meal and said he had received ten marriage proposals by morning mail. He vowed to select the best looking offer and have children to leave his fortune to, hoping to outmaneuver banks and relatives.
Newport news reports the first US Navy submarine flotilla practice in Narragansett Bay aboard Castine. Viper, Cuttlefish, Tarantula, and Octopus completed speed tests and submerged torpedo firings with Whitehead torpedoes up to two thousand yards. Cuttlefish led, Tarantula second, Octopus third, Viper fourth. flotilla heads to New York next week. Also listed are Columbus Ohio rail fare details in ad copy.
Havana reports the first drawing of the national lottery held in the Treasury Building. A dense crowd gathered from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. as prize numbers were rushed to newspapers and lottery offices citywide. The capital prize of 60,000 went to a winner amid much excitement. Tickets totaled 300,000 with a government profit of 100,000.
Police posters in Pittsburg announce a large jewel and diamond robbery believed to be the city’s largest. About 190,900 dollars in jewels were stolen from a suburban home of a wealthy resident, including a ten thousand dollar diamond and several pieces valued five to six thousand dollars. Six detective agencies join the chase.
Westport Connecticut September 14 artist Joseph Childs of New York committed suicide by shooting himself in the head at a friend’s home in Westport. He was found unconscious in his room and died soon after. Childs about forty had been in low spirits for days and had just arrived by train for the visit. His body was moved to a local undertaker and notify New York friends.
District Attorney William A. Blakely of Pittsburg lies seriously ill at Allegheny General Hospital with doctors uncertain about recovery. He collapsed after a political picnic amid rumors of poisoning. Blakely, famed for anti graft work and rumored engaged to Jean Oliver, son of U S Senator George T Oliver, left a $50 000 yearly practice to pursue justice.
A New York Customs House inspector found a $1 bill in his pocket that did not belong to him and turned it over to Acting Secretary of the Treasury Reynolds. The inspector suggested the money likely came from a passenger on the French or Hamburg piers last Friday. Loeb endorsed the note, calling it proof that even customs inspectors have a conscience. Reynolds credited the bill to the conscience fund.
Washington September 10 mail carriers are not required to deliver mail to homes where vicious dogs are allowed to run at large. Postoffice regulation requires dog owners to call at the postoffice for their mail to protect carriers.

She receives 25000 alimony plus furniture and effects valued at 5000 in the Mount Royal suite. The settlement includes 190000 damages against ex Governor Brown for alienation of affections.
