Cherbourg dispatch reports the Norddeutscher Lloyd liner Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse, en route from Southampton and Cherbourg to New York, collided with the Royal Mail steamer Orinoco. Both ships severely damaged. several crew killed or missing and many injured. The Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse, built 1897 at Stettin, 625 feet long, 14,349 tons, was among the fleet’s largest. The Orinoco serves Southampton to Colon, with New York as a port of call.
Emily Williams a Hoboken housemaid and niece of Mrs C B Alexander and Colonel Stevens plotted to rob Miss M B Garnett at 506 River Street Hoboken to fund a stage career. After a staged assault the $15 was found outside, the hat proved false, and Williams confessed. She received probation.
Andrew Carnegie pressed Manhattan real estate operators with details of the loss as Judge Curry, the ex-judge, fails to keep a vacant East First Street plot. Curry borrowed 100000 from Carnegie, the mortgage expired, and foreclosure sold the parcel for 105000 with taxes added. Daniel Gaffney held title as dummy owner. Ball, an eighty seven year old sculptor, earlier made busts and statues in Boston and New York including Washington, Josiah Quincy, Charles Sumner, John A. Andrews, the emancipation group, Lincoln and the slave, and Daniel Webster in Central Park. He remains active in his studio daily.
Speaker James W. Wadsworth Jr met Erie County Assemblymen in Buffalo to review next session work and committee chairmanships. Prominent candidates for Ways and Means and Judiciary were named, with various expected leaders across parties and districts. A note adds timetable changes on Pennsylvania Railroad for November 25.
