A powerful fifty mile gale sunk the City of Monticello off Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, with 33 feared dead. Only four survivors, including Captain A. N. Smith, were saved. A long list of victims, crews, and passengers from Yarmouth, Halifax, and nearby towns is reported, with details on missing relatives and fortunes.
The City of Monticello arrived at Yarmouth about 3:30 p m with three survivors: stewardess Kate Smith Third Officer Fleming and Wilson Cook. Miss McDonald Second Officer Murphy and a colored girl perished as lifeboat occupants were swept away by the sea. The vessel, a side wheel iron boat of about 1000 tons, ran from St John N B to Halifax via Yarmouth and along the South Shore. Built in 1866 Wilmington Del by Harlan Hollingsworth, it was once known as City of Norfolk and commanded by Captain T H Harding. Cape Forchie, prone to disasters, is highlighted.
The three masted schooner Myra G Weaver wrecked in Vineyard Sound early this morning. Six people perished including Ila De Boe of Mobile and Miss Mary Emerson of Mobile. Others named were John Hejman of Finland Charles Magnussen of Bergen Willem Petersen of New Orleans and F S Vannaman captain of Philadelphia. Four survivors rescued by City of Macon include John Kearney Ras mus Olsen George Johnson and Axel Oggla.
Gould recovers his yacht Atalanta from a canceled sale to Colombia after the government failed to pay the remainder. The vessel, to be fitted as a gunboat, was to yield Gould eighty thousand dollars with the Driggs Ordnance Company receiving the balance. The ship now lies in Erie Basin. crew members hired for Colombia have not been paid and threaten a libel. A Venezuelan offer of 120,000 is noted as a possible purchase.
A broad conspiracy of professional perjurers sought quick divorces through forgery and suborned perjury. Four people Henry Ziemer Mary H. Tompkins Mrs Byrde Herrick and Frank Wilson arrested with warrants for others named Maison Royal suspected ringleader. Advertisements offered fake divorces with dummy lawyers and forged witnesses.
